Louth Ladies beaten by Cork

Louth 4-6 Cork 2-14

Louth ladies were narrowly defeaten by Cork ladies in a game of two halves yesterday in Cappincur outside Tullamore, Co. Offaly. The Louth girls captained by Orlaith Kirk failed in their attempt to make it five consecutive wins in the Division 2A National League. Cork got the opening score in the first minute of the game and from then on the girls from the south took control of the game. The girls from Cork scored a tally of 1-10 in the first half and Louth only responded with three points leaving a 10 point difference between the teams at half time. Karen Kane went off injured in the first half and was replaced by Elaine Rogan. Good play by Janine Pepper in goals and good play by Tara Lynch and Orlaith Kirk in the first half accounted for the Louth scores. A penalty was awarded to Louth towards the end of the first half and Ann-Marie Murphys shot was saved by the Cork goalie.

Regrouping by the Louth team at half time saw a different team emerge in the second half and the girls from the wee county began to show Cork the talent within the county. Bronagh Leonard was replaced by Patricia Marmion who opened the second half score with a goal for Louth. Sharon Drumgoole was moved in to full forward and Ann Marie Murphy was out on the forty. Points by Lynn Savage and Ann Marie Muphy saw Louth come within five points of Cork. However a penalty was then awarded to Cork which was saved by Janine Pepper but the cork girls were quick to the rebound and the ball went to the back of the net despite the best efforts of the Louth goalie. A penalty was then awarded to Louth and this time Ann Marie Murphy made no mistake and the ball went to the back of the net. An excellent pass by Orlaith Kirk to full forward Sharon Drumgoole saw Sharon put the ball to the back of the net.

Louth were coming back in to this game with fire and hunger. However the fire and hunger of Louth was soon quenched as the Cork ladies responded with two points followed by point from Roisin Hanlon and a goal from Patricia Marmion. Another point for the Cork girls saw them edge two points ahead as the full time whistle blew. Louth now have a place in the quarter final of the Division 2A National League for which the draws have yet to be made. Louth will be disappointed not the have won against Cork but should be content with their two point defeat as the girls from the wee county really only began to play in the second half of the game. Louth had great play from Grace Lynch and Orlaith Kirk.

Also the underage players were out in Cappincur against Offaly on Saturday. The U14’s had a good win and the U16’s captained by Ann-Marie Lynch were beaten by the Offaly team.
