May Steele Ladies Sevens’ Sponsored by O’Neill’s Sportswear and Clubtel on Saturday 9th October in Castlewellan Co Down The Ladies Sevens hosted by St Malachy’s GAC Castlewellan Co Down will take place this year on Saturday 9th October. The date was put back from Saturday 14th August at the request of a number of senior teams because of County Championship and league commitments during August and September. The Club organising committee eager to maintain the high standard of the ‘May Steele’ Sevens now in its fifth successful year agreed to set a new date in order to accommodate many of the senior Clubs interested in competing in the prestigious competition. Castlewellan Ladies Sevens has grown in stature each year and the Club has attracted major new sponsorship for the 2004 Sevens from ‘Clubtel’ and from O’Neill’s International Sportswear. As part of the 3 -year deal agreed with O’Neills the winning team would receive a £1000 sports voucher and player of the tournament will receive an individual sports voucher for £50. This is in addition to the individual Belfast Crystal trophies for winners, runners up and player of the tournament. Teams from Antrim, Armagh, Cavan, Derry, Down, Dublin and Monaghan and Louth are among the top Clubs already committed to competing for the May Steele perpetual trophy which was won last year by Clann Eireann from Armagh. Any other senior Ladies Clubs interested in entering should contact the Club Secretary on 07714232783 email castlewellangac@gaelmail.com or visit the Castlewellan Club website at www.castlewellangac.com The Club hopes to build on last year’s very successful competition when 18 teams from Ulster and further a field provided a tremendous day of football in a sun drenched St Malachy’s Park. Clann Eireann of Armagh were the winners of last years competition beating Castlewellan in the final. The winners and runners -up received Belfast Crystal trophies and the winning team also received the May Steele perpetual trophy. The hard working sub-committee are determined to make this annual competition the show-piece that Ladies football deserves and to mirror the success of our Adult Men’s All-Ireland Invitation Sevens now in its 25th year hosted by St Malachy’s Club in September of each year. The men’s 7-a-side is second only to the famous Kilmacud Sevens which are held each year on the eve of the All-Ireland Final. The teams for the Ladies Sevens on 9th October will be divided into groups of four teams that will play-off on four separate venues in Castlewellan on a league basis. The group winners and runners-up will play the final stages of the competition in St Malachy’s GAA Grounds on a knockout basis, thus guaranteeing each participating team a minimum of 3 games. The competition will commence at approximately 11.00am with the finals scheduled for about 5.00pm. The presentation of the May Steele Perpetual Trophy to the winning team together with individual sponsored Belfast Crystal trophies to the winners and runners up and a special Belfast Crystal sponsored award to the Player of the Tournament will take place after the finals. The event is more than a sporting occasion; it is also a great social event with evening meal and musical entertainment in the Clubrooms following the presentations. The Club are hoping that many of the visiting teams opt to make a week-end out of it and stay over in some of the town’s hospitable guest houses and family run hotels.
