The Orchard’s rising star was honoured on the back of an exceptional 12 months for the versatile teenager, who is an international handballer as well as a highly-promising inter-county footballer. Having won Ulster and All Ireland Intermediate Championship medals last season with Armagh, McKenna has since captained Queen’s Freshers to the All Ireland Sevens title and been an influential figure in their historic O’Connor Cup triumph. Central to her county team’s march to the recent National League Division Three final, the 19-year-old has been included in the Ulster squad for this weekend’s interpro tournament after walking off with the top prize at Armagh Sports Awards. The former Ulster Schools captain top-scored in two league games this spring, including contributing all but two points of Armagh’s 1-9 in the narrow away win against previously unbeaten Leitrim.
