MEATH LADIES Bord Gáis Energy Ladies National Football League – Division 2 – Round 7 Meath v Down Pairc Tailteann – Navan Throw in 12.30p.m. Sunday April 11th 2010Half Time: Meath 2 – 07 – Down 1 – 07 Full Time: Meath 3 – 16 – Down 2 – 09 Referee: Tony Lennon – Dublin. Meath went into this final round of the NFL knowing nothing short of a win would do to keep their NFL hopes alive. The Meath girls opened the scoring with a point courtesy of St. Ultans player Shauna Bennett in the first minute of the game followed almost immediately by a well taken goal from club mate Elaine Duffy. Meath were passing the ball well at this early stage and things looked ominous for Down when Bridgetta Lynch split the post in the fifth minute. Down settled eventually and full forward Kate McKay pointed in the sixth minute. Elaine Duffy once again added a point before Down went on a mini scoring spree putting over three unanswered points before Meath rallied again. The game was nip and tuck over the next fifteen minutes with both teams reeling off points. With just over twenty minutes gone the sides were level though Meath had the slight edge. Down hit the lead when Captain Kyla Trainor sent over a well earned point in the twenty third minute. This was quickly followed up by a Duffy point from a free. In the dying minutes of the first half Meath managed to salvage their pride when Mary Sheridan latched onto a long ball and buried it in the back of the net. Duffy again split the posts with her trusty left boot to ensure Meath went into the break with a goal advantage. The second half started much the same as the first half ended with Meath hitting the first score from the boot of Tara Ryan. Down then took the initiative and put a goal and two points on the board before Meath snapped into overdrive. Full forward Kate McKay and Lisa Morgan hit a point a piece before Kyla Trainor netted for the Mourne girls. This put Down ahead by the narrowest of margins. This seemed to awaken something in Meath and they went on to score a further goal and six points unanswered to bag themselves a place in the Division 2 semi final. Mary Sheridan was having an inspired game at full forward and netted once again. Jenny Rispin (2) Elaine Duffy (2) Shauna Bennett (2) and substitute Orla Sheridan all added their names to the list of scorers. Meath now head to Donegal on either Saturday April 22nd or Sunday April 23rd. The time and venue will be confirmed tomorrow Monday. Meath having already been beaten by Donegal in this campaign will definitely be seeking revenge. Meath didn’t play well against Donegal and were missing some key players on the day so no doubt they will be eager to put things right when the sides meet again.
