Munster Junior Ladies Quarter Final Replay

Moyle Rovers 2-9 Listowel Emmetts 2-5

A brave battling Listowel came up short in their bid for munster glory in Glanworth on sunday last when a 5 Star performace from Tipperary inter-county star Gillian O’Brien proved too much for the young Kerry side.

Unlike the drawn game both sides served up some great free flowing football and this time around both teams set out to win this tie. Miriam O’Keefe had listowel in the lead on the 4th Min after Aoife Dilliane was fouled and the busy Laura Lavery pointed from the Kick out to put 2 points to the good into a head wind. It looked like Listowel would move further ahead but a Miriam O’Keefe mis-kick from a free on the 7th min went harmlessly wide.

Moyle Rovers with Ann Marie McGrath had the teams level on the tenth min with a well taken free and a point from play after Gillian O’Brien was heaveliy involved in both moves. Indeed O’Brien was to be involved in every score for the Tipp team over the hour.

Listowel still created many chances but a succession of 6 wides in ten mins left the Tipp team off the hook and when Laura Lavery shot was excellently saved by Ciara O’Donoghue and Aoife Dilliane hit the post it looked like Listowel were going to have to dig deep to get a result. Gillian O’Brien Put Moyle Rovers ahead on the 22min for the first time in both matches and they were never to trail again. Mary Beades suffered a heavy Injured 3 mins from time in the first half and with a gaping hole in her absence Moyle Rovers converted 1-1 through Niamh Lonnergan(Goal) and Lydia Ahearne (Point).

Breda Lane and Laura Lavery saw their early second half points cancelled out by Lonergan and McGrath to leave the game poised 1-5 to 4 points. Lavery tested out Ciara o’Donoghue again with a goal bound effort but the Moyle Rovers keeper – whose father is a Listowel native- again kept it out. Listowel were still competing away however Megan Galvin picked up a yellow on the 16th Min and in her absence Moyle added 1-3 with Ahern(0-1)Gillian O’Brien(0-1) Shauna O’Brien(0-1) and Ann Marie McGrath a goal. Listowel through caution to the wind and put on Caoimhe O’Sullivan(did not start due to injury) and sent Heather O’Rourke back to the edge of the square from Corner back and Listowel showed true spirit as they fought their way back in a matter of mins, First Lavery fired over before Caoimhe O’Sullivan goal and O’Rourke brought in back to 2-8 to 2-5 with another goal but Lorriane Power made the game safe with a late Moyle Rovers point.

In the end Listowel will looked to the positive strides they made and might wonder what might have been if they convert some of their 13 wides. Moyle Rovers on the other hand had more experienced players and on a day when little divided the teams in effort and endeavour it was the calmer experienced Moyle Rovers girls that used their experience to pull through. It must be remembered that Moyle Rovers suffered at the hand of Scartaglin 2 years previous so nobody in Kerry would begrudge this victory and wish them all the best in the rest of their campaign
