O'Connor Cup Weekend Line Up Completed

After a month of intense competition and a hectic final round of action this week the final pairings for the O’Connor Cup weekend have been confirmed.

Queen’s University Belfast are the 2014 tournament hosts and defending O’Connor Cup Champions but they had to wait until yesterday to confirm their place at the tournament. In a winner takes all clash with Institute of Technology, Sligo it was the Belfast college that came through the test making it two wins out of two to top their group ahead of UCC thanks to a 2-08 to 4-13 win.

In the other group it was already know that both UL and DCU would both compete in Belfast but they met on Thursday to decide who would come out of the group in first or second position. UL made use of home advantage in Limerick to record a resounding victory over DCU on a scoreline of 3-15 to 2-03. The reward for UL is to avoid the hosts but they will still have it all to do when they meet a strong UCC team in their semi final. On the other side of the draw Queen’s will meet DCU in a repeat of last year’s final.

The Giles Cup semi finals will feature Mary Immaculate College Limerick when they face IT Carlow and in the other semi final Athlone IT will meet NUIMaynooth with the final taking place on Saturday, March 21st.

The other Ladies HEC competition taking place on that day will be the Lynch Cup where there will be some strong teams in action. CIT will take on Robert Gordon’s University Aberdeen in the first semi final and they will meet the winners of the St. Pats v DKIT semi Final.

This promises to be a great weekend of football with the O’Connor Cup Final being broadcast live on TG4.
