Report: Munster claim 2019 Lidl PPS Interprovincial title, as Leinster land the Shield

ULSTER hopes for a three in a row of Lidl PPS Interprovincial titles were dashed on Saturday afternoon as Munster secured a narrow one point victory to claim their first crown since 2016. Munster had won all three of their round games before securing a 1-04 to 1-03 win in the Cup Final. Meanwhile, Leinster took home the Shield for the first time since 2016 as they defeated Connacht by 1-05 to 0-02 in the final played in Kinnegad.

It was a miserable cold and wet day which certainly made things more difficult for the four provincial panels, but supporters cheering on their respective teams created a warm atmosphere.
Munster set their stall out early, defeating Connacht by 3-11 to 0-06 in the opening round before accounting for Ulster in Round 2 and Leinster in Round Three. Ulster defeated Leinster and Connacht to secure a place in the Cup decider, the latter a terrific Round Three match as the reigning champions came from behind to defeat Connacht by 1-07 to 1-03.

In the Cup Final, Ulster were first to strike, Dearbhla Coleman splitting the posts but Munster began brighter; Loreto Fermoy’s Katie Quirke pointing twice from frees before Ellen Baker found the net with a penalty. Ulster looked threatening on the attack with Eimear Smyth converting a free from wide on the left as time ticked towards the half-time break. Quirke converted her third free of the half and Munster took a 1-03 to 0-02 lead into half-time.
Munster extended their lead at the start of the second half, Fiona Keating hitting a high and curling effort which went straight over the black spot. Outstanding performances from both sets of defences made for a tight affair in the second half with Ulster throwing everything at the Munster rearguard. With time ticking away, Ulster eventually found their way through, Eimear Smyth raising a green flag for the two-in-a-row champions and while Lara Dahunsi brought the gap back to a single point, time had run out as Munster celebrated their first win since 2016.

Wexford’s Sarah Harding Kenny hit the net as Erone Fitzpatrick, Emma Lawlor, Emma Duggan, Hazel McLoughlin and Orlagh Lally all raised white flags to seal the Shield title, their first since 2016.
