TG4 Championship Round 2 Draw

2014 TG4 All-Ireland Ladies Football Championship Launch

ULSTER rivals Monaghan and Tyrone have been pitted together in round 2 of the TG4 All-Ireland ladies senior football championship qualifiers.

Elsewhere, last year’s intermediate champions Cavan have been handed a fixture with Laois following their victory over neighbours Meath on Saturday.

Donegal will take on Kerry and Mayo, beaten Connacht finalists, have been handed a fixture against Westmeath, who defeated Clare on Saturday.

In Saturday’s round 1 qualifiers, Cavan scored a notable victory against Meath in their local derby at Pairc Tailteann in Navan.

Claragh O’Reilly scored 0-7 and claimed the player of the match award for Cavan, with Geraldine Sheridan adding 1-2, as the Breffni ladies ran out 1-15 to 0-13 winners.

Sheridan’s first half goal helped Cavan to lead by 1-6 to 0-7 at half-time and goalkeeper Caron Fay had also saved a penalty from Meath’s Katie O’Brien, who was sin-binned with two minutes left.

Bridgetta Lynch was on fire for Meath early on, hitting three points from play by the 14th minute, but the Oldcastle player limped off injured in the second half.

In the preceding game, Tyrone bounced back from their crushing Ulster championship defeat to Armagh with a 3-17 to 1-13 qualifier victor over Tyrone.

Captain Gemma Begley led the way with a haul of 1-6 for the Red Hands, who led by 1-11 to 0-4 at half-time.

Cara McCrossan scored the first half goal for Tyrone, who added two more in the second half from Alanna McShane and Begley.

Elaine Dillon scored an early second half goal for Kildare and while Grace Clifford contributed four points from play, the Lilywhites were outclassed as Begley, Emma Hegarty, Cathy Donnelly and Neamh Woods led the Tyrone charge.

In Birr, meanwhile, Westmeath ran out 1-13 to 0-10 winners against Clare, with Maud Annie Foley bagging 0-7 for the winners. Ruth Kearney scored the crucial Westmeath goal.

In the curtain raiser at St Brendan’s Park, Tipperary’s intermediates ran out 1-14 to 1-11 winners against Wicklow.
