Tipperary Ladies Football Notes

Tipperary win first All Ireland U14 ladies Football Title.

History was made in Banagher last sunday when Tipperary U14 ladies footballers won their first ever U14 All Ireland title when they defeated Roscommon on the scoreline of 3-07 to 1-06. This was a fantastic result for the girls and Tipperary ladies football as a lot of work has gone into underage development in the last 2 years and last sunday was the culmination of this. The game itself started nervy for Tipperary and within 5 minutes of the start Roscommon had the first goal of the game. Tipperary began to settle and following a sweeping move up the field Tipperary were on level terms with Roisin Howard getting her first goal of the game and with points from Megan Burke and Aoife Corcoran Tipperary began to play good open football and a point from Roisin Howard gave them a 3pt lead midway through the first half. Roscommon however came into the game and following some good passages of play they added 2 points in the 17th and 19th minutes. Tipperary however had other ideas and a sweeping move up the field saw Roisin Howard score her 2nd goal of the game and a point from a free from Courtney Lonergan and further points from Roisin Howard and Caoimhe Condon saw Tipperary go into the half-time break leading on the score-line of Tipperary 2-05 Roscommon 1-02.

The second half saw Tipperary make a change with Saoirse Mcgeever replacing Elaine Fitzpatrick at full forward and it was Tipperary who opened the scoring with a point from Roisin Howard which extended their lead. However Roscommon continued to carry the fight to Tipperary and 3 unanswered points brought Roscommon to within 4pts of tipp but a break down field by Tipperary saw Saoirse McGeever score Tipperary’s 3rd goal and despite a penalty miss from Roscommon which hit the post Tipperary sealed victory with a point from Sinead Buckley and at the final whistle their was great scenes of joy as Tippperary had secured their first All Ireland U14 title on the final scoreline of Tipperary 3-07 Roscommon 1-06. The player of the match award was presented to Tipperary’s Roisin Howard by Pat Quill President of the Ladies Gaelic association who then presented Roisin with the cup. This has been quite a journey for Tipperary which has started over 3 years ago through underage development and last sunday saw the culmination of all the work put in. To the Manager Biddy Ryan and selectors Andrew Meaney,Tom McCarthy,Gary Hallinan and Caroline Cadell a job well done. To Mischa Murchan who took on the role as team doctor we thank you for all your guidance and medical expertise. To all who sponsored the team we are deeply grateful to you as it would be impossible to keep going without your assistance. To the County Board and all the clubs who gave us their pitches during the year and anyone who helped out at different times we are very thankful to you. Last sunday erased the memory of 2008 and 2010 and heres hoping that this is the start of things to come for Tipperary Ladies Football.
