U14 Leinster Final

Venue: St Laurences GAA, Co. Kildare

Kildare 2.03 Dublin 8.12

By Jackie Whelan

In a repeat of last year’s final, Kildare and Dublin travelled to a windswept St Laurences to compete for the 2011 U14 Leinster title. Dublin had convincingly beaten the young Lilywhites earlier on in the championship so Kildare were well aware of the task ahead. Dublin had the strong wind at their backs for the first half and took full advantage scoring 4.03 in the opening ten minutes. Kildare struggled to settle in to the game as the Dublin players had full possession of the ball. Kildare girls Molly Price

and Shauna Kendrick battled hard for possession. Emer Ni Cheallaigh in the Kildare goal was under severe pressure for the entirety of the game but still managed to show her experience between the posts and pulled off some fine saves. Dublin continued to dominate the rest of the half and their work rate on and off the ball was impressive. It was in to injury time of the first half before Kildare got their first score through a well struck penalty from Caoimhe O Fearghail leaving the half time score

Kildare 1.00 Dublin 5.07.

Emma Byrne scored 2 quick points for Dublin in the opening two minutes of the second half. Molly Price scored a great point for Kildare 3 minutes in to the second half. The Kildare girls began to get more possession and battled hard. Niamh Mulhall added 2 points for Kildare. Dublin continued to tag on the scores and the gap increased. The full time score Kildare 2.03 Dublin 8.12. This Dublin team arrived to Kildare with only a win on their minds producing some great flowing football with some super scores. The Kildare girls battled hard and never gave up and can be proud of their displays of football throughout the championship campaign. This final wasn’t to be but this team will regroup and we hope to see all the girls in the Kildare jersey again.
