Waterford 2-10 Wexford 1-9

Waterford made it two out of two in the Bord Gais National League, with a four point win over neighbours Wexford in Kilmacthomas on Sunday. Wexford who were missing some of their first choice players, including full back Leona Tector and goalkeeper Mary Rose Kelly, made Waterford work for their victory.

Waterford, playing into the wind, got off the mark in the second minute of the match with a pointed free from Michelle Ryan. Wexford responded with a point from a Deirdre Fox free. Mairead Wall edged Waterford ahead with a point but Wexford responded with points from Lizzie Kent and Catherine Doyle to lead by a point after 10 minutes. Sinead Ryan leveled the score soon after, finishing an excellent move started by Aileen Wall and involving Elaine Power and Michelle Ryan. Indeed Waterford could have gone in front a minute later when Michelle Ryan shot wide when a goal looked possible.

Wexford went ahead with another Fox pointed free on fifteen minutes. Waterford’s net minder Aimee Jordan made a good save from Wexford’s Fiona Rochford after she had run through the Waterford defence. Sinead Ryan leveled the score again on the eighteenth minute to finish off a move started by Aileen Wall. Waterford took the lead with an Aileen Wall point, when Grainne Enright missed a goal opportunity from very close range.

Waterford’s lead didn’t last very long as in Wexford’s next attack, Rochford waltzed through the Waterford defence again and blasted the ball off the under side of the cross-bar into the net to lead by two points. Waterford’s Michelle Ryan missed with a free kick before her sister Sinead finished off an excellent Waterford attack with a well taken goal on the twenty sixth minute. Points from Rochford and Sinead Ryan (1f), saw the sides go into the half time break level at 1-6 each.

Waterford started the second half with Grainne Kenneally at full back having come on just before half-time for Roisin Tobin and Louise Ryan coming on for Cliona O’Keefe at full forward. Waterford, playing with the wind in the second half put the Wexford defence under constant pressure. Sinead Ryan who had taken over the kicking duties from sister Michelle put Waterford ahead with frees on the second and fourth minute. The second free also resulted in referee Richie O’Connor yellow carding Wexford’s Linda Casey. Waterford added to Wexford’s woes on the seventh minute when an Aoife McGovern shot went under the Wexford keeper’s arms to put Waterford five points ahead.

In the thirteenth minute, Waterford’s keeper, Jordan made an excellent save from a powerful Fox shot, tipping the ball onto the cross-bar and collecting the rebound herself. Waterford only managed two points in the remainder of the half, a Ryan point from a free on fourteen minutes and an Elaine Power point on 27 minutes. Wexford managed three points in the half, from Kent, Mythen and McMahon.

After a reasonable first half the second half of this match was a non event with Waterford finding it difficult to break down a packed Wexford defence. Best player for Waterford on the day was Sinead Ryan who had a personal tally of 1-6. Aileen Wall, Mary Foley, Mairead Wall and Grainne Kenneally also did well.

Waterford’s next match is away to Roscommon in Dr Hyde Park next Sunday at 2.00 pm
