Waterford 4-12 Wicklow 0-3

Waterford got their Bord Gais National League campaign off to a good start with an easy win over Wicklow in Hollywood, on Sunday. Waterford's new manager Jason Lynch will be satisfied with his sides performance given that they do not have a lot of work done.

The match started slowly with neither side showing any great urgency. Waterford's Aoife McGovern shot wide in the 3rd minute and Michelle Ryan kicked a free wide after Elaine Power had been fouled as she headed towards goal. Ryan made amends 2 minutes later when she slotted over a 25m free to give Waterford the lead.

Wicklow's first opportunity came in the 8th minute, when Anne Marie Doran sent a free kick just wide of the posts. Straight from the kick-out the ball was moved quickly up-field for Linda Wall to score Waterford's second point. Ryan missed with another long range free before slotting another free from all of 35m to give Waterford a three point advantage.

Wicklow were awarded a penalty on 13 minutes when a Waterford back was deemed to have fouled the ball in the small square. Waterford's goal keeper, Aimee Jordan got down well to her left to make a great save from Wicklow's, Caitriona McKeown. Jordan made another fine save five minutes later when she tipped a powerful ,dipping shot from Wicklow's Anne Marie Doran over the bar for Wicklow's first and only score of the half.

In Waterford's next attack, Aoife McGovern was unlucky to see her shot come back of the crossbar and Trish Fitzgerald sent the rebound wide. With Waterford's midfield pairing of Michelle McGrath and Elaine Power controlling midfield and Mary Foley, Mairead Wall and Nora Dunphy well on top in the backs Waterford's forwards were able to keep the score-board ticking over.

Waterford's first goal came just before half-time when Linda Wall dispossessed a Wicklow back and sister Aileen sent a great pass into Michelle McGrath, who slotted the ball home from 10 yards. Waterford added 5 points in the second quarter, with scores from Ryan (0-3, 1f), McGrath (0-1) and Linda Wall (0-1). Waterford went into the half time break 1-8 to 0-1 ahead.

Wicklow made some tactical substitutions at half-time with Lisa Brady coming in to the centre back position and Niamh Carroll moving from full forward to the wing. The changes had an instant impact with Carroll losing her marker and putting over a good point from 30m for Wicklow's second score of the match.

Waterford's forwards were guilty of kicking some bad wides in the opening minutes of the first half, before Linda Wall score her third point of the match on the 35th minute. Wicklow's Doran nearly got through the Waterford defence on the 36th minute, but excellent defending by Roisin Tobin saw her shoot wide. Waterford brought on Roisin Manahan for Trish Fitzgerald on 40 minutes.

Waterford's second goal came on 45 minutes after an excellent flowing move started by McGovern and involving Wall and O'Keefe gave Manahan the opportunity, which she converted in style. Sinead Ryan came on for Linda Wall on the 50th minute and was involved in setting up a goal for her sister Michelle after another good run by McGovern. Ryan scored another 1-2 and Aileen Wall scored a point for Waterford to run out comfortable 4-12 to 0-3 winners.

Waterford's next match is at home next Sunday to Wexford in Kilmacthomas. Throw-in is 2.00 pm.
