Wicklow 5-8 Kildare 0-4

Match Report Under 16 match V Kildare 14 March 2009

Wicklow 5-8 Kildare 0-4

Wicklow u 16 ladies football team will be very pleased with their start to the Leinster ‘A’ championship campaign. Played in Dunlavin last Saturday the Wicklow girls scored an emphatic victory over near neighbours Kildare by a margin of 19 points.
Wicklow’s captain Shauna Fleming won the toss and elected to play with a slight breeze in the first half. This tactic appeared to have backfired in the opening quarter as the Wicklow girls appeared nervous and hesitant. The teams were level after 15 mins at one point a piece with Kildare having slightly shaded the match up to that point . In truth had Kildare taken their opportunities they could have been 4 or 5 points ahead.
Wicklow’s centre back Sarah Miley grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck at this stage with a series of inspiring catches and sorties out of the backline. This had the desired effect on her colleagues who all collectively lifted their game. Wicklow dominated the remaining period of the first half. A well worked goal after 18 mins when Aife Kavanagh set up Keyleigh Crammond signalled a succession of scores for Wicklow who reached half time with a 10 point lead on a score of 2-6 to 0-2.
Wicklow continued with their confident display in the second half. Their link up and interchange play was a delight. Kayleigh Crammond was on hand to finish a wonderfully move involving Laura Allen, Jackie Kinch and Lucy Mulhall to the net. This score seemed to completed deflate the Kildare girls and Wicklow appeared to get on top throughout the pitch.
Excellent play by Wicklow’s full back line of Sarah Hogan, Hannah Kavanagh and Naomi Roche snuffed out all of the Kildare efforts and restricted Kildare to just two points in the second half. The Wicklow midfield of Jackie Kinch and Niamh Arthur covered a lot of ground and mopped up a lot of possession.
In the forwards Kayleigh Crammond’s tally of 4 goals and 2 points gives a measure of the class of her display. She was well assisted by Erinne Murphy, Aife Kavanagh, Shauna Fleming and Lucy Mulhall.
This was a good team performance with each member of the team playing well and contributing to the overall performance. The Wicklow management was particularly delighted with the performance of Megan O’Brien in goal. Making her intercounty debut she was competent and assured throughout and her clearances and kick outs were well delivered and accurate. Similarly Niamh McGettigan from St Pats club who made her intercounty debut in the half forward line. She gave a wonderful and tigerous display for the entire hour. Wicklow’s two wing backs, Laura Allen and Sarah Reid both playing on their home pitch, gave outstanding defensive displays and repeatedly broke down Kildare attacks and intelligently played good quality ball into the forwards.
Wicklow’s next outing is against Meath on 28th March.
