McConnell adds another accolade

Donaghmoyne and Monaghan’s ace attacker, Cathriona McConnell, landed the coveted Gaelic Life Ulster Club Ladies Footballer of the Year Award, beating off stiff competition from Newtownbutler’s Kyla McManus and Termon’s Roisin Friel to take the title, which last year was claimed by Sperrin Og’s Eimear Teague. McConnell enjoyed a fantastic 2012 as she was part of the Ladies National Football League winning Monaghan team and later won All Ireland Club honours with her club, Donaghmoyne, who were also victorious in the TESCO HomeGrown All Ireland Club 7’s. The lethal forward also enjoyed a good year of individual honours as she collected Player of the Month and All Star Awards and has now added this latest honour to her impressive list.

It’s hard to believe at times that McConnell is still only 23-years-old She received the perfect birthday present recently by helping steer her side to the All-Ireland title. Having been chosen as captain this season, McConnell lifted silverware at county, Ulster and All-Ireland level, her scores crucial in helping Donaghmoyne to a string of impressive and comprehensive victories. Always a prolific scorer, McConnell has matured even more as a player over the course of this campaign, and is now arguably the most deadly attacker in the ladies code.

Ulster Ladies President Hugh Devenney was on hand on Monday night to present the Donaghmoyne sharpshooter with her award, bringing the curtain down on what was an incredible 12 months for the prolific attacker.

The Ladies Gaelic Football Association would like to join Gaelic Life in congratulating all award winners, as well as the wider GAA community in Ulster who once again gave the awards their full support with over 12,000 online votes having been registered.

Further reaction from the night, as well as a wide selection of photos, will be included in this Thursday’s edition of Gaelic Life, with information also available through the website at www.gaeliclife.com
