Third Level Competitions

Over 30 Third Level Colleges in Ireland (including PLCs, ITs and Universities) compete in several Provincial and All Ireland competitions during the months of October – April each year. There is also a steady growth of Colleges in the UK participating in organised College competitions the highlight of which is the British Championships.

All Ireland Championships:

Division 1 Championship: O’Connor Cup.

This is contested by the top eight teams in the country based on an open draw.

Division 2 Championship: Giles Cup.

This Championship started in 2010. 2011 saw 7 teams taking part in this competition.

Division 3 Championship: Lynch Cup.

12 teams participate in Division 3. It is an open draw with a straight knockout system. British University Champions qualify for the semi final.

Division 4 Championship: Donaghy Cup.

4 provincial blitzes are played to decide provincial winners. These Provincial winners proceed to an open draw for semi finals.

Division 5 Championship: Lagan Cup.

4 provincial blitzes are contested to decide provincial winners. These Provincial winners proceed to an open draw for semi finals.

All Ireland Leagues .

Division 1 League: O’Rourke Cup.

The division 1 League is contested by 8 teams split into 2 groups 1A and 1B. Top two teams in each group qualify for semi final.

Division 2 League: Curran Cup.

The division 2 League is contested by 6 teams split into 2 groups, 2A and 2B. Top two teams in each group qualify for semi final.

Division 3 League: Quill Cup.

Division 3 League is contested by 16 teams split into 4 groups, 3A, 3B, 3C, 3D. Top team in each group qualifies for semi final

Division 4 League.

Division 4 League is contested by 16 teams split into 4 groups, 4A, 4B, 4C, 4D. Top team in each group qualifies for semi final

Division 5 League.

Division 5 League is contested by 8 teams split into 2 groups 5A and 5B. Top two teams in each group qualify for semi final

Provincial Championships.

The Dowd Cup is the only provincial championship it is played in Ulster with Universities and Counties represented.

Freshers All Ireland 7-A-Side Blitz.

This is a one day competition that is open to First year students only (ie Freshers). It usually attracts about 20 – 24 Colleges. The Blitz is held early in the College year around November and is a great day for all the first years to get together. Participating teams are divided into groups and play each team in their group once. The top team from each group qualifies for the Cup, the second placed teams qualify for the Shield and in recent years the third placed teams have also competed for the Plate.
