Ulster retain Lidl Post Primary Schools Interprovincial title

Ulster retained their LIDL PPS inter-provincial title in Kinnegad on Saturday thanks to a gutsy final performance against Munster.

In their first game Ulster defeated Leinster 2-8 to 1-5 the goals coming from Orla Prenter and Michelle Magee. Maria Canavan also contributed three points. In the second game Munster beat Ulster 1-8 to 0-3. While the scoreline shows an 8 point deficit in reality the game was much closer. Munster’s goal was somewhat fortunate and Ulster missed an open goal.

The province also lost their keeper Caoimhe Meek after she collided with the post. In the third round robin game the team turned in a super performance to defeat Connacht. Shannon Mc Laughlin and Aine Devlin both found the net in that game and victory set up a final place against Munster.

The final was a low scoring affair. Ulster lost the toss however Munster opted to play against the wind. After a tight first half only a point separated the sides. Maria Canavan opened the scoring with a point however Munster responded with 3 points from their captain Fiadhna Tagney.

The tactic of playing Dearbhla Coleman at full forward paid off as the St. Ronan’s player found the net for the halves only goal. Things were equally tight in the second half.

Early on Sarah Leahy was sin binned for a foul on Louise kerley and Tyrone county player Maria Canavan netted the resulting penalty. The only other score of that half came from Munsters Aine O Dwyer and Ulster went on to win 2-1 to 0-4.
