Bryansford hold out against Carryduff in cliffhanger

Bryansford hold out in close match

Bryansford and Carryduff battled it out in the preliminary round of the Ladies Senior Championship on Sunday evening in St Patrick’s Park Newcastle. In a scrappy game the home side held the upper hand in the opening quarter with Natasha Ferris opening the scoring for the home side after 2 mins with a fine point from play. Bryansford continued to create chances but poor shooting let them down. On a rare Carryduff attack it took a great intervention by the Ford keeper Emma Joyce to keep the Duff girls out and on 10 minutes the Ford defence were finally taken part as the ball travelled the length of the field with some nice interlinking play and ended up in the hands of Jessica Foy who struck for a fine goal. Bryansford upped the tempo and they were rewarded with good scores from a Shannon Kelly free-kick. Natasha Ferris tagged on another good score and with the mid-point of the half fast approaching we were all square. Kathryn Ward and Clara Fitzpatrick pointed for Bryansford as Carryduff struggled to make their possession count in the final quarter of the field. D Early lobbed over a free after 23 minutes to keep the Duff girls in the hunt but Bryansford responded with scores from Shannon Kelly and Kathryn Ward to reach the half-time whistle with a comprehensive and well deserved lead of 0-08 to 1-01.The second half started in a flourish with both teams trying to get that elusive first score but it was Natasha Ferris who found herself in the right place to kick her 3rd point of the day and push the Ford further in front. The same player had a shot bounce off the crossbar a minute later much to the relief of the Carryduff management. Carryduff were slow to get started but by the 10th minute they had found their shooting boots and narrowed the deficit with a point from play with good work from half back Hannah Megorrian in the build-up. Jessica Foy added another point as the Ford girls began to lose a grip around mid-field. Bryansford responded with another rasping shot re-bounding off the crossbar but that goal was always coming and by the ¾ mark Natasha Ferris offloaded a great shot to back of the net to give the Ford a commanding lead. Carryduff not to be outdone travelled the length of the field in their next attack and dispatched the leather to the back of the Bryansford net and this was quickly followed by a great point from Kate McKay on the turn. The bryansford number 11 was sin-binned in the 18th minute but Carryduff were unable to make their numerical advantage count on the scoreboard. In the 24th Minute the Duff had a great goal chance but the ball slipped agonizingly wide of the post. As the game approached full-time Bryansford kicked over a point which was neutralized by a like score from Carryduff. Deep into injury time with just 2 points separating the sides Carryduff mounted one last attack and their half-forward found herself bearing down on goal, a rushed shot saw the ball rise high and over the bar for the final score of the game to leave the full-time score Bryansford 1-10 Carryduff 2-06.
