Down Ladies fixtures/Results and Round up

In the Senior League Clonduff traveled to Cherryvale on Tuesday evening hoping to make amends for a recent heavy defeat inflicted upon them by the belles but they had no answer to the sheer power of this Bredagh side. The Belles dominated the game from the throw-in and thwarted almost every Clonduff attack whilst throwing up scores for fun at the other end of the pitch. This was a massive win for Bredagh and probably the heaviest defeat ever suffered by Clonduff at senior level. While Clonduff will have accepted the league defeat they will now realise that all their efforts must go into retaining the championship and this will require a mammoth effort if they are to overturn a rampant Bredagh side who are on course for a league and championship double.

In the Intermediate League Burren’s good form continued with a comprehensive win against visiting Loughinisland. This win moves them up to 3rd in the league behind Carryduff and Ballymartin. It also puts them back into contention for the runner-up spot and the Lilywhites will have to be weary of a re-juvenated Burren side when they meet later this month in the league.

In the Junior league, Drumgath scored a late goal to sneak a win against Clonduff on Saturday evening. The Drumgath girls worked hard and their persistence was rewarded with this fine win.

The Week ahead

In the Junior League first meets second in what should be a very entertaining game. Teconnaught were well beaten in their last encounter by Mayobridge and they will be eager to make amends. On the other hand Mayobridge have waltzed through the league throwing up major scores along the way. To date only Tullylish have given the sky blues any real concern and Teconnaught will have noticed that Mayobridge are not invincible. Will it be enough to overthrow the Mayobridge dominance, probably not but this encounter should be a lot closer than the last one. In the other match Tullylish host Clonduff and if at full strength they should just have enough to take both the points.

The U-16 league nears conclusion and in Section A, Ballymartin travel to Downpatrick where a win will take them one step closer to league honours. The lilywhites currently top the league but they will need to be at their best as the hoops are playing well at the moment. Second placed Carryduff host neighbours Bredagh and they must win to maintain the challenge and take advantage of any slip up by Ballymartin. Current form suggests that Carryduff will take both points but a home derby could make things interesting. The meeting of Teconnaught and Burren will be closely contested but i expect the South Down side to just edge proceedings. Bosco entertain Bryansford and the Newry side should take both points on offer.

In Section B, it looks like a two horse race for the title. Annaclone and Saul currently sit joint top but Saul have a game in hand. The meeting of the two sides in a fortnights time could decide the title but it will be important that there are no slip-ups this weekend. Annaclone should account for Castlewellan but this will be a much tougher game than first expected, Castlewellan have been playing well and but for two minimum defeats at the start of the season they could have been challengers themselves. I still expect Annaclone to advance but they will have to work hard for it. Saul entertain Rostrevor and they should have enough firepower to maintain the challenge at the top. The meeting of Clonduff and Saval is likely to go to the wire and an draw cannot be ruled out. Both teams can potentially challenge the top two but the loser will definitely drop out of contention. The other match will see Shamrocks travel to Bright and the South Down side should claim both points.
