MONAGHAN HARPS SEVENS

Donaghmoyne claimed their fourth consecutive Abbey Fanning Sevens
title on Saturday when they comprehensively beat Aghabog in the
final. The reigning Ulster champions went through the competition
winning all of their seven games.

After winning their group, Donaghmoyne accounted for Cooley (Louth)
in the quarterfinal and then in the semi final they beat reigning
All Ireland sevens champions Tyholland. Aghabog also won their
group and in the quarter final they beat Donegal outfit Termon.
In the semi final they needed extra time to overcome Emyvale.

Amanda Casey and Catriona Mc Connell proved Donaghmoyne’s match
winners in the final contributing 1-4 and 0-5 respectively. Donaghmoyne
raced six points ahead before Aghabog registered their first score
and at the break they lead 1-3 to 0-3. In the second half Donaghmoyne
continued to dominate and scored another 1-9 to win 2-12 to 1-4.
Mc Connell a former Ulster young player of the year was named
player of the tournament.

Donaghmoyne were denied a double as Latton beat their B team in
the Shield final 2-8 to 2-7. Donaghmoyne qualified for the final
with a comprehensive 4-10 to 0-3 win over Doohamlet while Latton
had a much tougher decider, beating Derry Kingpins Glen 2-6 to
0-5.

The foundation for Latton’s final victory was a great first half
display which seen them lead 2-3 to 0-4 at the interval. During
the first half the sides were level three times however late goals
from Leanne Herron and Dianne Dempsey gave Latton a five point
lead midway through the game. In the second half Donaghmoyne managed
two goals of their own through Sheila Burns and Louise Ruddy however
Ruddy’s strike was the last kick of the game and was too little
too late. Former County player Dianne Dempsey finished top scorer
with 1-4 while Latton’s captain Lavina Connolly was named player
of the shield competition.

The competition once again proved to be a major success providing
competitive football for teams who have a break due to exams.
The only downside to the day was a broken collar bone suffered
by Scotstown goalkeeper Edel Corrigan. All involved send their
best wishes to Edel for a speedy recovery.
