TESCO NFL Round 2 Round Up

ALL-Ireland champions Cork collected their first competitive victory of 2013 against Meath in Sunday’s Tesco Homegrown Ladies National Football League Division 1 tie.

Ace forward Valerie Mulcahy was in scintillating form for the Rebelettes at Clyda Rovers GAA club.

The four-time Allstar finished a haul of 2-7, including three points from frees.

Cork won by 3-15 to 4-4 to help erase the memories of the previous weekend’s loss to League champions Monaghan.

At half-time, Cork led by 3-6 to 3-2 but Eamon Ryan’s charges did not score for 17 minutes in the second half.

Meath got to within two points of Cork but the hosts finished strongly to secure maximum points.

Emma Farmer also netted for Cork as Geraldine Doherty finished as Meath’s leading scorer with 2-2.

Mulcahy was the undoubted star turn for Cork but Meath goalkeeper Irene Munnelly was also impressive between the sticks for the Royal County.

Meanwhile, Donegal scored a surprise 3-10 to 2-7 victory against Dublin at Chanel College.

Geraldine McLaughlin was the hat-trick hero for Donegal, who bounced back from their loss to Laois in the opening round of fixtures.

Dublin got off to an excellent start when Denise McKenna netted but McLaughlin scored three goals before half-time as Donegal responded in style to lead by 3-3 to 1-3 at the break.

At Augher, Laois claimed a second victory from two League outings as a long trip to Tyrone proved worthwhile.

Martina Dunne scored 1-5 and Ciara Burke also goaled for Laois as Tyrone fell to a second successive League defeat.

The O’Moore County led by 2-5 to 1-7 at half-time and held on in a low-scoring second half to claim a 2-8 to 1-9 win.

The match between Monaghan and Mayo was postponed due to an unplayable pitch.

In Division 2, Kildare recovered from a sluggish start to record a 2-5 to 2-4 victory against hosts Cavan at Killinkere GAA club.

Cavan led by 2-1 to 0-1 early on, and by 2-3 to 1-3 at half-time, but the Lilywhites hit back to claim victory with just a single point to spare.

At Tuam Stadium, Galway were convincing 3-14 to 2-7 winners against Waterford and Westmeath won by 2-18 to 1-3 away to Fermanagh.

In Division 3, there were victories for Armagh, Down and Longford against Wicklow, Sligo and Tipperary respectively.

And in Division 4, Limerick enjoyed a big victory over Derry as Offaly scored a six-point win against Roscommon.
