TG4 ULSTER INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIP

You know the summer has started when its championship time. The TG4 Ulster championship kicks off on Sunday next with the intermediate semi finals down for decision in Clones.

First up is the meeting of Cavan and Down at 5pm. This should be a very interesting affair. Cavan play a Division higher than Down however their league campaign was nothing special with five losses and just two wins. The Breffni side have lost a number of key players from last years side. Full back Grainne Mc Glade, forward Grainne Smith and play anywhere Bronagh Sheridan are unavailable for a number of reasons. Down on the other hand have also lost players such as the Fegan twins from their 2011 side however their Division 3 league campaign was ok. The Mourne girls won four games and managed to reach the semi finals before losing to Leitrim. New manager Benji Ward has given a number of players their chance and competition for places in the starting 15 is healthy. Don’t be surprised if it takes extra time to sort this one out.

Armagh will play Fermanagh at 7pm thus giving anyone who wants to see the Orchard men v Tyrone the chance to do so. The orchard girls found themselves in Division 3 of the league however new man at the helm James Daly gave youth its chance and alongside some more experienced heads Armagh lost just one game in the league and were beaten in the semi final by eventual winners Westmeath. That league run will have given the orchard side lots of confidence ahead of the game with Fermanagh. The Erne girls needed a final game win against Galway to secure their Division 2 status for next season. They also showed great character to draw against Division 2 league winners Mayo. Darren Boyle has managed to keep most of last season’s side. Although the sides play in different divisions of the league this one will be alot closer than the pundits are predicting.
