Championship Shield Final Foxrock/Cabinteely U11s defeated St Judes 1-9 to 2-2 in a thrilling Championship Shield Final last Saturday, 9th October at Frank Kelly Park, home of Ballyboden Wanderers GAA Club . Scorers on the day were Hannah Burke(0-4), Jennifer Burke (0-2), Lorna O’Sullivan(0-2), Aoife Geoghegan(0-1) and Aisling Fitzpatrick with the all important goal. Foxrock/Cabinteely controlled the early part of the game going into a 4 point lead. Katie Fisher, Aoife Geoghegan and Ashling Fitzpatrick worked tirelessly in the full forward line while team captain, Lorna O’Sullivan, Hannah Burke and Jennifer Burke in the half forward line tormented the Judes defence. Then a spirited comeback by St Judes saw them notch up a goal and a point to even the score. In truth Judes would have scored a lot more but for some tenacious and skilful defending by the Foxrock/Cabinteely defensive unit of Kate Schutte, Sarah Fenn, Rebecca Kelly in the full back line and Aedin O’Donnell, Katie Mc Garry, Aoife O’Connell in the half back line and goalkeeper Ellen Dooley. Only a fantastic point blank save by the St judes goalkeeper denied Lauren O’Riordan a great goal to put Foxrock/Cabinteely back in front. This save inspired Judes and they notched up another point before half time to lead at the break by 1 point, 0-4 to 1-2. The 2nd half saw some changes in positions and personnel. Ellen Dooley and Lauren O’ Riordan switched positions while Madeline Glynn, Niamh Cullen and Ellen Boucher were introduced. Foxrock/Cabinteely started with a renewed determination, intent on regaining and keeping the lead. Emma Crotty and Ellen Dooley controlled midfield with a great display of high fielding(spittle on the hands works every time !!!). Foxrock/Cabinteely notched up a goal and 5 points to for a commanding 7 point lead. Again St. Judes weren’t finished. With 5 minutes to go, back St. Judes came and scored another goal to cut the defecit to 4 points. Ailbhe Keevey was introduced to help out the Foxrock/Cabinteely defence. Tough defending ensured that there were no more scores with Foxrock/Cabinteely running out 4 point winners 1-9 to 2-2. The final whistle was greeted by ecstatic cheers and a team roll down the hill from some very, very tired young footballers. A special mention should go to substitutes on the day. They were Alana Jones, Katie Flemming, Emily Suen, Ashling Cullen and Gemma Mathews. They gave the girls on the pitch fantastic support throughout the match. This was a great team performance and just reward for the hard work and effort all the girls have put in since last Feb. Congratulations to the mentors Gerry Mc Garry, Fiona Burke, Margaret Kavanagh and Sam O’Sullivan for their hard work and effort during the year and also to parents Loretto, Patricia, Tony, Noelle, Paula and Kathleen for helping with the medical, training and social needs of the girls. Also thanks to St Judes for a very sporting and spirited game and to Ballyboden Wanderers GAA Club for the excellent facilities and hospitality they showed us on the day. Gerry Mc Garry.
