Down were hosts to Armagh ladies in this Board Gáis National League fixture at Saval on Saturday evening.Down opened the scoring when Kate McKay lobbed over a long range point. Armagh replied with a point but during this half scores were hard to come by with both sets of backs closing down well. Colleen Magee, Niamh Canavan and Emma Mulhern were keeping check on the Armagh full forward line with Aine Hardy, Niamh McGowan and Sinead Fegan marshalling along Down’s half back line.

Both sides traded points with Down’s coming from the hard working Natasha Ferris. Half way through this half Down were reduced to fourteen players when Kate McKay got sin binned. With Down stretched Armagh upped the pressure. A long speculative ball from Armagh dropped awkwardly for the keeper and ended up in the Down net. Down responded and a break from Kyla Trainor saw her cut through the Armagh defence and tap over the bar. At midfield Clara Fitzpatrick was dominating the kick-outs and distributing well.

Up front Lisa Morgan and Chara Laverty were winning good possession and keeping pressure on the Armagh backs. Kyla trainor got Down’s last point of this half leaving the interval score:

Due to injury Down started the second half without the influential Chara Laverty, Eimear Kane stepping in to take her place. With Grainne McClean, Orla Fegan and Kate McKay all working hard up front, a good passing move saw Orla Fegan tap over. Over the course of the match down’s young goalie Katie Farrell made a number of fine saves and distributed with confidence.

Mid-way through this second half The Down ladies had a dominant spell. Lisa Morgan took a point and good support play down the middle ended up with Eimear Kane who drove to the Armagh net. Kyla Trainor put Down into the lead getting through for a point.

Down were again reduced to fourteen players at a crucial stage of this game with Emma Mulhern getting a yellow card. With the Down Back line stretched Armagh regained the lead breaking through for a goal. Down were nearly back in business when Kyla Trainor drove through and sent a pile driver at the Armagh net. A good save from the Armagh keeper saw the ball deflected over the bar for a point.

Subitutes Keira McDade and Aine McCurry played well on the back lines while Natasha Lennon, Kerry-Ann Magee and Louise Kelly all tried hard up front. Lisa Morgan and Kyla Trainor got Down’s two final points.
