Down ladies travelled to Clones on Sunday for this second round match in the Ulster Championship. This was to prove a stern test for the Mourne ladies up against the Division One side.
Tyrone started the sharper and rattled over five points in as many minutes without reply from Down. T he pace of the Tyrone ladies stretched the Down back lines , where Ciara McArdle, Niamh Canavan and Colleen Magee battled hard to contain the continual wave of Tyrone attacks.
The Tyrone ace Gemma Begley stretched the Tyrone lead when she struck for two goals midway through this half.
The Tyrone half backs were dominating and their running attacks up -field increased the pressure on the Mourne defence.
Outfield Kyla Trainor and Aine Hardy battled hard for possession while Down’s best forward Michaela Downey got Down’s only two scores this half.
Kate McKay, Grainne McClean and Orla Fegan tried hard on the half forward line but found the speed and combination football of the Tyrone outfit difficult to get to grips with.

The Down ladies upped their game at the start of the second half. Louise Kelly playing a sweeper role came strongly into the game. At centre half Sinead Fegan intercepted Tyrone attacks and got good support from Laura Sharvin and Emma Mulhern.
Natasha Lennon and Eimear Kane won more possession and over the next twenty minutes both sides broke evens trading four points apiece, three coming from the boot of Down’s Michaela Downey and one from Grainne McClean. Aoibheann Downey on her return to intercounty football after a long injury helped to steady the centre.
The young Down Goalie Kerryaine Magee had her work cut out between the posts but kept her cool and pulled off a string of good saves. In the closing stages substitutes Jordan Magee and Keira McDade worked hard.
