Climb4Clare Update

Climb4Clare continues to provide support for cancer care centres and oncology hospitals around the country and families are reaping the benefits of this. We are delighted with the support received to date but also are encouraging you to get involved in this amazing campaign to fundraise with your club or county. All fundraising efforts can be shared 50/50.

To date there have been three training weekends for CLIMB Leaders and last Monday we also ran a ‘Writing for the Future’ training which was fully booked. Your funding is helping so many families and see below the list of cancer care centres and hospitals around the country that can now provide this essential CLIMB programme to families. In the last few weeks a further training has also taken place with Cancer Focus NI and the programme will be going into many towns in Northern Ireland too including Dungannon and Newry to name but a few. As mentioned above we also ran a ‘Writing for the Future’ Workshop last Monday and it was booked out. ‘Writing for the Future’ is a service for parents whose prognosis is less positive. As a trained facilitator of this project they will guide parents on writing their thoughts and stories, helping to create lasting memories. These are then printed in a book that will be keepsake forever for the children involved and provide them with much needed support and guidance for years to come. We conducted this with Clare Clarke and her children have a beautiful memento of their amazing mother and will remember her thoughts forever.

The facilitator will sit with a dictaphone or video camera and interview people, ask questions such as what makes you proud, what are your values in life, what are your family traditions etc. These are recorded with pictures and made into a book that is then given to the family, findings showed that often people wanted to write but the overwhelming emotion of trying to do this alone was too much.  So the facilitator will buddy with them, hear their wishes, dreams and hopes. They are listened to and recorded for the future. Books are then created that are lasting memories for the families, but also empower the individual to feel they have control. For very young children it is a memory of a parent and confirmation and assurance that the parent loved them, wanted them and dreamed for them.

We were delighted with the response last year but want to continue to have funds available. Every cent goes to the programmes directly! This can be an event in your club or feel free to join our Hell&Back event on 10th September which will be great fun. The feedback from last year’s event was extremely positive with many teams using this as an end of year team building event. This is open to all teams from Gaelic4Mothers&Others through to county senior teams. This course is usually 12km or 14km so a great opportunity to try out the event as this will be 7km. An addition to the event for 2016 is a ‘Hell&Back’ Junior Event on Sunday 11th September is any of your underage clubs would like to assist in the fundraising also. Full details on the junior event are available at http://www.hellandback.ie/Current-Events.aspx?EventGUID=9a7e70fe-6ccc-4bb7-b355-7aaf8a2b9180

The cost of the main event is €39 per person (normally €75) and this special rate is available only to people that are collecting money for Climb4Clare so the super fit athletes will not be in your way! Under 14’s are not allowed to participate and under 18’s must have written permission. All you need to do is select a group leader to be the main point of contact, start raising funds for Climb4Clare when we forward your sponsor card and get training! Remember you also have the option of raising 50% for Climb4Clare and 50% for your club or county.

There is also a regular Hell&Back Event taking place on the day so you need to follow the below steps to register for the specific Climb4Clare course.

To reserve your place then just follow these steps:
