Abbey Fanning Sevens Tournament

Donaghamoyne claimed their seventh Abbey Fanning Cup title with an emphatic 7-12 to 0-2 win over Scotstown at Monaghan Harps Ground on Saturday. In the Shield final Knockbride from Cavan beat Magheracloone 5-9 to 1-13.

Abbey was surely looking down from heaven as the promised rain never materialised and the 13 sides who signed up at 9-30am served up some wonderful
football throughout the day.

After the round robin stages and quarter finals the last four standing in the cup competition were Donaghamoyne, Clontarf, Monaghan Harps and Scotstown. In
the first semi Donaghmoyne seen of the challenge of Dublin outfit Clontarf 0-11 to 0-3 while in the second decider the host club fell to Scotstown by a single point 2-5 to 1-7.

In the final a young Scotstown side had no answer to a powerful Donaghmoyne outfit. The south Monaghan side hit 1-4, the goal from Joanne Geoghgan before
Scotstown registered their only score of the half, a point from Orla McCarville. Donaghmoyne continued to press and a couple of goals from Niamh McCarthy and Sharon Courtney along with a duo of points from Michelle Grimes left the half time score 3-6 to 0-1 in their favour.

Younster Niamh Callan had a dream start to the second half netting twice in the first minute. Niamh Mc Carthy and Edel Corrigan then traded points but from here on it was all Donaghmoyne. A further 2-5 followed to give them a 7-12 to 0-2 victory. Player of the tournament Cora Courtney was the top scorer with 2-2 while midfielder Amanda Casey scored five fisted points.

In the shield semi final Magheracloone beat Aghabog 3-12 to 4-5 and Knockbride defeated Truagh B 6-4 to 4-8. In the final Cavans Knockbride proved too strong for Magheracloone winning by eight points  5-9 to 1-13. Daena Clerkin from Knockbride was named shield player of the tournament.

Afterwards the winners and runners up received their awards from Abbeys father Kieran Fanning and event sponsor Raymond Aughey.
