St Mary’s Macroom 2-12 Presentation Tuam 2-03

St Marys’ Secondary school Macroom made history at Mungret on Saturday by becoming the first Cork school to win the coveted All-Ireland Junior A Secondary schools Ladies Football title. This was a victory expertly achieved with poise, panache and with an abundance of skill and determination. The Tuam girls came seeking the double, with 12 of their Senior squad from the week before, on the team. After Macroom had raced into a 4 point lead through Lisa McSweeeney Ellen Healy, Noelle McSweeney and Shelley Shine, the Galway girls gave themselves hope with a smashing goal from Lisa Connolly, but inspiring captain Katie Lynch got another back immediately and Macroom were never in real danger after that.
They turned over with a 1-07 to 1-01 advantage and the 2nd half was mostly one way traffic and when Pres, did get through, they found Macroom keeper Phiomena O’Mahony in sparkling form. So too were the entire back division and none more so than Emma Dunne Carmel McCarthy and Anita Thompson. Briege Corkery later named player of the match wandered all over the filed and gave an incredible display of stamina and finesse, their forwards combined very well with Noelle Corkery, Lisa McSweeny and Ellen Healy particularly impressive.
In the end they ran out worthy winners of their first title. Full credit to the Galway girls for not giving up without a fight. Their capt Edel Concannon did everything she could to get them back in the game and she was well supported by Louise Comer Una Carroll, and Cora Joyce, and Lisa Connolly, they too can take credit for playing their part in such a memorable game.
