Wicklow ladies football round-up The ladies football championship quarterfinals were played over the weekend with all results going to form. In the junior championship the semi-finalists will be Clara, Kilcoole, Arklow and Eire Óg, while in senior Blessington and Bray Emmets meet first round winners Carnew and An Tochar respectively. The match of the weekend was in Kilcoole on Saturday evening when the home side saw off Baltinglass after an enthralling battle, 2-10 to 3-4. Kilcoole are likely to be challenging for the title but had to work extremely hard to overcome a spirited young Baltinglass outfit. Susan Hackett (1-3) and Pamela Maher (0-3) were top scorers for Kilcoole while Sandra Carroll (2-0) and Geraldine Norton (1-2) were in good form for the western side. As expected Arklow Geraldines had a relatively straightforward win over newcomers Donard the Glen (8-8 to 1-2), while Clara were too strong for Kilbride’s second team. However the scoreline of 6-13 to 1-2 did not reflect the game fairly as Kilbride were unlucky not to put away a few more scores. In the last junior game Eire Og travelled to Carnew and came away with a 4-5 to 0-2 victory. Leah Horan was one of the Greystones stars with 2-3, while Jade Coffey scored a great individual goal and Caolfhinn Deeney also impressed. In the senior championship Bray Emmets’ greater championship experience showed as they despatched Kilbride on a 5-13 to 2-8 scoreline. Bray owned the ball for the first half with Éadaoine Lenihan dominating midfield and built up a comfortable lead. But Kilbride came alive for the second half and put in a much improved performance. Bray’s young forwards Kim Cusack, Mikaela Shelly (2-2) and Aine O’Gorman (3-2) were a constant threat. In the second senior semi final Blessington put on an extremely impressive performance in defeating Valleymount by 2-19 to 1-0. In doing so they showed that they have championship ambitions and laid down a marker for the rest of the county.
