ULSTER U16 A FINAL
Inver College, Carrickmacross 5-2 Loretto College, Cavan
2-3

Inver College, Carrickmacross beat Loretto College, Cavan
in the Ulster U16 A final on Sunday last. Although the Monaghan
outfit won 5-2 to 2-3 the game was a closer than the score
suggests. To be honest there was very little between the
sides, however Inver were more economical in front of goal.
The winners had a great start and led at the interval by
2-2 to 0-1. Samantha Martin and Catriona Mc Connell scored
their goals. Loretto had a dream start to the second half
when Roisin O Keefe found the net after seven minutes however
Inver responded with their third goal through Sinead Busby.
O Keefe added another gaol after 16 minutes but as with
her first goal it was quickly cancelled as Catriona Mc Connell
found the net with Inver’s next attack. Busby then scored
her second goal of the game but more importantly her side’s
fifth goal and from here there was no way back for Loretto.

JORDANSTOWN LIFT 5TH CONSECUTIVE DOWD CUP

There was double delight for the University of Ulster at
Jordanstown at the weekend as they won both the Dowd Cup
and McNally Shield. Their Dowd Cup victory was their seventh
overall Ulster title and their fifth in a row. Despite winning
1-12 to 2-6 the Poly girls had to fight hard against a tough
and sharp Queen’s side. Jordanstown had the better of the
first half and led at the break 1-6 to 1-2.

Fermanagh’s Caroline Little, who had an excellent game,
scored the Poly’s goal while Caroline Kelly found the net
for Queen’s. Early in the second half, with Jordanstown
on top, Queen’s Tina Donnelly was sent off for a second
bookable offence. Rather than deflate Queen’s this seemed
to lift them. Jordanstown struggled for long periods and
didn’t use their extra player. With 10 minutes to go Jordanstown
were up by six points, and Caroline O’Hanlon then found
the net for Queens to leave only three between the sides.
However the introduction of Nuala McGarvey helped to steady
matters and the reigning champions finished strongest. Added
to this Queen’s missed some very easy scores.

For Jordanstown Caroline little was brilliant. She contributed
1-4 and caused the Queen’s defence all sorts of problems.
Selena Oguz controlled midfield whilst Shauna Woods was
the pick of the defenders.

Queens battled hard and were best served by Caroline Kelly,
Briege McGarvey and Christina Agnew. Queen’s were obviously
very disappointed. Goal scorer Caroline Kelly said afterwards:
“the team are totally gutted, we really thought we were
in with a good chance. The game was there for the taking
but it was not to be our day.”

In contrast Jordanstown’s Anne Dooher couldn’t hide her
relief when it was over saying: “That was scary stuff. It
was really touch and go for a while and I have to admit
we were lucky to win in the end”.

There was some consolation for Queens as Aisling Hagan was
named player of the tournament.

In the McNally Shield, Jordanstown’s B team didn’t need
any luck as they hammered the University of Ulster Coleraine
6-15 to 1-1. Centre forward Kelly Marie McCrory had a fine
game however the performance of the day must go to full
forward Aine McIlroy. The Moneyglass sharpshooter scored
5-4 of her side’s tally.

BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIPS

There was heartbreak for Liverpool Hope in the British Championships,
which were played in Birmingham at the weekend. Strawberry
Hill scored the winning point in the last minute of the
final and went on to retain their title on a score line
of 2-4 to 1-6. Monaghan’s Slainey Murray scored five of
Hopes points whilst her teammate, Mairead Tennison (Mullagahbawn)
was player of the tournament.

THIS IS YOUR LIFE KATHY DURKIN

A ‘This is your Life’ night featuring singer Kathy Durkin
was held in the Farnham Arms Hotel, Cavan last week. Fr.
Brian Darcy surprised the unsuspecting Kathy at the event,
which raised over E7,000 for Cavan Cancer Day Care Unit.
One of the highlights of the night was looking back at Kathy’s
football career. She captained Cavan in the Ulster final
against Armagh in 1977 and then went on to win the All-Ireland
beating Roscommon 2-3 to 2-0.
