Armagh 2-04 Tyrone 2-09

Ulster Semi Final

Armagh 2-04 Tyrone 2-09

The Red Hands got of to a blistering start and it was their fifteen minute opening blitz that really sealed this tie. Gemma Begley and Sarah Donnelly had notched up 2-02 for their side before Armagh had even got on the scoreboard. Begley opened her sides scoring with a pointed free before Donnelly doubled her sides advantage. Tyrone’s first goal came following good work by Cathy McCullough and Gemma Begley. Armagh were just recovering from this set back when a long looping shot from Begley found its way to the top of the Armagh net.

A goal and a point from Mags McAlinden finally got Armagh off the mark and Begley and McAlinden traded points to leave Tyrone ahead on a scoreline of 1-02 to 2-04 at the break.

Armagh got a dream start to the second half when Caroline O’Hanlon planted her free kick in the back of the net. With only two points in it, the game suddenly ignited and Armagh began to dominate, showing glimpses of the football they are capable of. Shauna O’Hagan, O’Hanlon and Meabh Moriarty all had chances before Clodagh McCann showed superb vision and skill to split the posts. A point from Sarah Donnelly increased Tyrone’s lead again and although Armagh were creating more chances and competing better for breaking ball, they were still unable to find the breakthrough they needed. Laura Brown added a point to reduce the gap once again but Tyrone took total control of the game from there on. Points from Sarah and Jolene Donnelly left no way back for Armagh and the Red Hands ran out winners on a scoreline of 2-04 to 2-09.

This was a disappointing result for Armagh who didn’t play to their full potential at any stage. During their brief period of dominance they had Tyrone on the back foot but they couldn’t sustain that pressure for long enough. While Tyrone advance to the Ulster final where they will face the winners of Donegal and Monaghan, Armagh must return to the drawing board and plot their path through the qualifiers. There is a huge amount of talent within this squad and Armagh will be more than a match for whichever they face in eight weeks.
