Armagh come away with the points

Sligo 1-05  Armagh 2-10

The 3rd round of the TESCO HomeGrown National Football League was held on Sunday last in Markievicz Park, Sligo where the visitors on the day were Armagh.

The first half was a very evenly contested game with both sides defending their ground with score for score.  Sligo opened up the scoring with a series of points from Karen Maloney when an early goal from Armagh settled them into the game.  Shortly after the full back Etna Flanagan made her way up the field and with a series of precision passes the ball ended with Elaine O’Reilly and like in her previous games she drove the ball to the back of the net. Sligo’s advantage was short lived as Noelle Gormley, Sligo’s goalkeeper, was deemed to have impeded a player in the square resulting in a sin bin for her and a penalty for Armagh.  Sligo Centre Half Back, Nicole Fowley stepped took Gormley’s place in goal and with her first act was to produce a fine save from the Armagh penalty to give the crowd, and her team a lift as Sligo went in at the break with a 1 point lead.

Sligo suffered at the hands of the elements in the second half as the wind visibly strengthened in favour of the Orchard County. Armagh scored the first point of the half but 20 minutes passed before the second score of the half arrived as both defences got on top. Another sinbin for a Sligo player was to prove vital as they tired against the wind and the Armagh attack who picked off late socres to secire the points whilst also holding Sligo scoreless in the second half.
