Armagh Overcome Spirited Fermanagh Ladies Ulster Ladies U-16 B Final ARMAGH OVERCOME SPIRITED FERMANAGH LADIES Armagh 0-16 : 1-10 Fermanagh Cullaville, South Armagh was the venue for this enthralling Ulster final and once again Fermanagh were within touching distance of a first Ulster title. Had it not been for some tenacious last ditch tackling and a soggy goal area Fermanagh’s influential mid-fielder Dannielle McDermott could have stole the show on two occasions in the final moments of the match as she drove through on goals. Armagh however withstood the onslaught and came out three points the victors. Fermanagh started the better and within ten minutes were leading by four points to one with Zoe Leonard, Tessa Cadden, Danny McDermott and Danny Maguire registering for Fermanagh against a point for Armagh. Armagh responded with two points from their star player Nicola Woods who continued to be influential throughout the hour. Fermanagh responded well and further points from Sarah Teague(2) and Edel Campbell (2) took Fermanagh into a four point lead after twenty minutes. For the next ten minutes Armagh attacked in force and pulled back three points without reply. With both teams flagging at the end of a hectic first half, Fermanagh found the reserves to run at a tiring Armagh defence with Campbell, McDermott and Sabrina Barrett to the fore. A point from Zoe Leonard was followed by the only goal of the game. A flowing movement in the dying seconds of the half saw Fermanagh half-backs Michaella Murphy and Fiona Fitzpatrick linking with forward Campbell who found Barrett in the clear some thirty metres out. She carried confidently and struck a clinical low shot to the left of McGrath in the Armagh goal. Half time Fermanagh 1-9 0-6 Armagh If the first half was Fermanagh’s then the second was surely Armagh’s as they took advantage of the backing wind and drove through the middle to good effect. Half forward Aoife Lennon along with half back Coleen McElherron and mid-fielder Woods dominated the centre exchanges and set up a tally of five points from the boots of Woods and McCooey. A solitary point from Danielle Maguire on 11 minutes was all Fermanagh could convert in the second half with Armagh continuing to take the few opportunities they got to score five points in the last ten minutes to win by three. Fermanagh’s failure to score is not a true reflection of the play as they played into good positions deep in the Armagh half and just couldn’t close out some of the matches best moves. On four occasions in the last five minutes Fermanagh had goal chances and each time the move broke down within the parallelogram. While there was bitter disappointment for the Fermanagh Ladies at the final whistle they should take great heart in the manner in which they performed against a very strong Armagh team Through out the hour Fermanagh’s defence was immense with Full back Rachael O’Dolan linking well with Stephanie Maguire and Jackie Curry to thwart all goal efforts and support the ever strong Donna Owens in goals. Fiona Fitzpatrick along with Murphy’s, Michaella and Sharon gave little quarter in the half back line and Danny McDermott was the driving force behind Fermanagh’s best moves. In the forward line special mention must given to Tessa Cadden whose work rate was superb throughout and who linked well with Leonard and Doogan.
