Banner Ladies At Féile Peil na nÓg, Cavan 2008

The Banner Ladies Club of Ennis again represented Clare with distinction at Féile Peil na nÓg 2008 in Cavan and Meath over the weekend. A late Limerick goal in the final group game cost them a possible semi-final berth. However with twelve of the panel underage for next year's competition and nine players eligible for the next three years the future looks bright for the Ennis side.

The weekend's festivities and football started with a welcoming reception and opening match against host club St. Ultan's of Boahermeen Co. Meath. Then it was off to Kingspan Breffni Park in Cavan for the opening ceremony and the spectacular Féile Parade. One hundred and fifty six teams marched in this year's event together with over twenty bands. The parade was led by the Garda band and team captain Shauna Crowley received a commemorative pennant from Uachtarán CLG and Uachtarán Cumann Peil na mBan Nicky Brennan and Geraldine Giles respectively.

Following their final game the Banner team was give a tour of Co. Meath by their hosts visiting such places as the Hill of Tara, Newgrange and Slane amongst others. A wonderful night of entertainment was then laid on for all players, mentors and supporters in the Bohermeen Community Centre. Following parish Mass on Sunday morning the team were given a wonderful send off by St. Ultans and the long journey home began. Though results did not go the Banner's way this year the hospitality and generosity of our hosts more than made up for this and everybody was in agreement that this was one of the best Féile's ever attended by the club.

Match 1: 2.15pm Friday July 4th in Bohermeen, Co. Meath

Banner Ladies 3 – 2 St. Ultan's (Meath) 1 – 2

The banner Ladies got their Féile 2008 campaign off to a winning start with a win over St. Ultan's of Meath. First half goals from Eleanor Carey and Sinéad O'Keeffe set up the Clare side and gave them a 2-2 to 0-1 interval lead. Both Banner points came from Rebecca Culligan. Despite playing into the breeze in the second half the Banner soon extended their lead with a Karen Woods goal. The Meath side finished strongly but never really threatened to overhaul the Clare side's lead

Match 2: 9.30am Saturday July 5th in Oldcastle, Co. Meath

Banner Ladies 3 – 0 Oldcastle 3 – 4

The early start and the blustery wet conditions proved too much for the Banner in this second game. Oldcastle had the aid of a strong wind in the first half and launched wave after wave of attacks on the Banner goals. They were rewarded with a 3 – 4 to 1 – 0 interval advantage with the Ennis side's goal coming from Karen Woods. The Banner strove valiantly to claw back the Meath side's advantage in the second and had further goals from Woods and Rebecca Culligan but their great effort came up short.

Match 3: 12.30pm Saturday July 5th in Oldacstle

Banner Ladies 0 – 3 Mungret St. Paul's 1 – 2

This was a cracking game between two evenly matched teams and a game the banner should have won but had victory snatched from their grasp with a late Limerick goal. Again the Banner had to play against the strong breeze in the first half but held the Limerick champions to just two points. Three points on the trot after the interval saw the Banner hit the front but an excellent save by the Limerick goalkeeper from a Rebecca Culligan penalty gave Mungret renewed hope and against the run of play they broke away for a late goal to steal the points. Rebecca Culligan scored all three points for the Ennis team.
