Bord Gais Energy Ladies National Football League Div. 3 Round 4

Clare 2-17 Limerick 2-8

At; Hennessy G.A.A. Park, Miltown Malbay

Right from the throw in it was evident that Clare meant business in this Div. 3 Round 4 National League Fixture played at Hennessy G.A.A. Park, Miltown on Sunday afternoon. The game’s top scorer, Niamh O’Dea had the ball in the Limerick net inside the opening minute.

Clare who dominated from start to finish maintained the lead throughout and by the end of the opening quarter led 2-5 to 0-2. All Ireland Junior Champions, Limerick seemed sluggish throughout and may have been over reliable on ace forward and former All Star Dympna O’Brien but she was well marshalled on the day by Clare Hester who confined her to just two points from play. Limerick’s corner forward Joanne O’Gorman had her side’s first half goal while three points from Eimear Considine, one each from Niamh Keane and Ailish Considine and a first half tally of 2-4 from Niamh O’Dea saw Clare retire in a comfortable half time position, ahead 2-9 to 1-4. David O’Brien’s side were unfortunate not to be much further ahead with at least three more goal opportunities narrowly missed. A feature of the game was the high work rate of midfielders Marie Considine and in particular Louise Henchy as well as block downs from Colette Corry and Henchy.

O’Dea also got the score board ticking in the second half, this time from a free and further points followed from Marie Considine, O’Dea again and 09 All Ireland winning captain enchy. It took Tommy Stack’s Limerick side fifteen minutes to register their first score of the second half, a point from half forward Kadie Colbert. The Clare forwards had the Limerick defenders and six’s and seven’s and on the rear occasion that Limerick did pass the Clare mid field section they found Roisin McMahon in fine form in her fist start in a Clare Senior Football Jersey. Niamh Richardson did break through for a soft goal and O’Brien chipped in with two pointed frees as well as a point from play.

Best for Limerick on the day were defenders Yvette Moynihan and Karla Sheedy while the full forward line of Catriona Davis, Dympna O’Brien and Joanne O’Goran scored 1-7 between them but needed much more possession in order to do damage.

All in all Clare will be pleased with the result but expected a sterner test from the Shannon side outfit. Next Sunday Clare will travel to play Wexford in Round 5. A difficult task awaits against the Slaney outfit who have defeated Longford and drawn with Down while they made Fermanagh fight all the way on Sunday after making the long trip to Derrylin. Having lost their opening round away to Leitrim they need a result on Sunday as they bid to stay in contention for a semi final spot.

Clare and Fermanagh are joint top of the Div. 3 table with 12 points from their four matches to date, Leitrim and Down are next on 7, Wexford are on 4, Wicklow have 3 with Limerick and Longford fighting relegation with 1 and 0 points respectively. The top four will contest the semi finals in which 1 plays 4 and 2 plays 3.
