Bord Gais Energy National League Round 7

Armagh 2-11 Tipperary 0-10

Armagh Ladies emerged victorious in their final game in the group stages of the 2010 league to finish joint top of the table along with Donegal after just one defeat. The Orchard girls led the game from start to finish with Shauna O’Hagan opening the scoring following excellent work from Sharon Reel. The first half was very evenly matahced with Tipperary mathing Armagh score for score . Barbara Ryan and O’Hagan traded scores before Caoimhe Morgan executed a perfect tackle to disposses Gillian O’Brien as she sprinted through on goal. Both teams were reduced to fourteen players with Armagh’s Sinead McCleary and Tipperary’s Jennifer Grant sinbinned. Tipperary lifted their game and were unlucky not to grab a goal when Gillian O’Brien’s goalbound effort was well stopped by Emma Guy. Mags McAlinden extended Armagh’s lead but Edel Hanley pulled one back for the visitors. Again McAlinden and Patrice Hickey traded points before Armagh seemed to begin to pull away with points from McAlinden and Caroline O’Hanlon. Tipperary’s high energy game paid of though with a quick brace of points from Hanley and Hickey leaving them trailing by the bare minimum at half time on a score line of 6-5.

Tipperary got a super start to the second half scoring a point on the restart to bring the teams level. Sinead McCleary drove forward and was unlucky to see a cracking effort rebound of the crossbar. That seemed to inspire Armagh though and they took the lead again when a long range free bounced over the bar. Ann Marie O’Gorman equalised once again for Tipperary. McAlinden and O’Gorman again traded points before Armagh began to pull away. Substitute Maria O’Donnell cut through the Tipperary defence to lay the ball to Shauna O’Hagan and the Clann Eireann star made no mistake to slot the ball past Maura Monnagh. Mags McAlinden converted a free kick before O’Donnell bagged a goal for herself to give Armag an unassailable lead. Shauna O’Hagan and substitute Marian McGuinness landed two brilliant scores to finsh the game on a high and leave the final score 2-11 to 0-10.

The Orchard girls saved their best performance to date until their last game in the league. Emma Guy was very steady in the nets pulling off a string of important saves in the first half and her kick outs were very reliable. As a unit the defence worked very well despite the greater height and strength of the Tipperary forwards. Armag dominated midfield and when the forwards got into their stride they got the scores they needed. Sharon Reel and Caroline O’Hanlon go through a Trojan work linking defence and attack. The substitutions made were excellent as well with every player making an impact when they came on. Armagh can now look ahead to the league play offs and the championship with a lot of confidence.

Armagh minors will continue their campaign when they play Antrim in Dromintee on Saturday at 3.00. A strong support is encouraged.
