Claregalway claim TESCO Homegrown Intermediate crown

TESCO Homegrown Intermediate All Ireland Club Final

Claregalway 1-09

Thomas Davis 0-09

Claregalway and Thomas Davis met in a keenly contested TESCO Homegrown Intermediate Club Final at St. Loman’s in Mullingar on a lovely day for football.

Claregalway struck first as Michelle Dunleavy tapped over a good free but for the next 10 minutes it was one way traffic as Thomas Davis took over and dominated possession eventually taking the lead after good scores from both of their midfielders, Olwen Carey and Miriam Liston edged the Dublin club in front. However, some of the Thomas Davis shooting was wayward and they were made to pay for their wastefulness as Megan Glynn raided forward from the Claregalway half back line setting up Charlotte Cooney who was brought down with the goal at her mercy. Thomas Davis were reduced to 14 players as Louise Curran was sent to the sinbin and Ciara Newell buried the resultant penalty. Further scores from Deirdre Brennan and frees from Ciara Burke and Michelle Dunleavy left Claregalway with a 2 point lead at half time 1-04 to 0-05 as Thomas Davis stayed in touch thanks to Sinead Deegan and Ciara McGuigan.

Claregalway started the second half brightly scoring the first of the second half thanks to a free from the ever reliable Ciara Burke. The Dublin club looked more and more to their senior star, Siobhan McGrath who started to exert more and more of an influence on proceedings setting up a move that lead to Ciara McGuigan putting over a free. Thomas Davis attacked in wave after wave but a combination of poor shooting and fantastic Claregalway defending kept them out. Deirdre Brennan lifted the siege for Claregalway with a well taken point but Siobhan McGrath responded in spectacular fashion with a long range point.

The decisive moment of the match came with just 11 minutes to play as Deirdre Brennan ran through the heart of the Thomas Davis defence but was fouled by Karen Sweeney Lynch who received her team’s second yellow card as Ciara Burke popped over the resultant free and she followed that with 2 points from play to send Claregalway 5 points clear with time running out. To their credit Thomas Davis never gave up and although they couldn’t find the goal they needed Miriam Liston did score a point to keep them in touch. Amanda Shields added another point for Thomas Davis to leave a goal between the sides but that was to be the last act of the game as Claregalway were crowned TESCO Homegrown Intermediate All Ireland Club Champions.

Thomas Davis had some excellent performances from the likes of Siobhan McGrath and midfield pairing of Olwen Carey and Miriam Liston. Claregalway owe a huge debt of gratitude to their excellent defensive unit which was brilliantly marshalled by Eimile Gavin and Player of the Match, Megan Glynn. Up front Charlotte Cooney, Deirdre Brennan and sharpshooter, Ciara Burke lead the way on a memorable day for the Galway Club.
