Confey from Kildare came out on top in Cooley last Saturday for their Inaugural Amby Kane Perpetual Trophy after some excellent displays of skill and determination by all teams. There were nine teams involved; Cooley Kickhams, Cooley Kickhams 1998/99, Naomh Bríd (Antrim), Confey (Kildare), St Patrick’s (Louth), Moneyglass (Antrim), Clann Eireann (Armagh), St Bride’s (Louth) and Dorsey Emmetts (Armagh). The skies remained blue for the morning part of the tournament and allowed the Cooley Club to showcase their surroundings to all the visiting teams and even when the rain moved in later in the day it was not enough to dampen the spirits of the players involved and the 7-a-side format allowed players to demonstrate all the skills to an extremely high standard. The eventual winners were Confey from Kildare as they overcame the home team Cooley in the final who battled hard to keep the trophy on home soil however the Kildare Club, who were runners up in this years Tesco All Ireland Club 7’s, were just too strong in the end and were deserved winners on the day. Áine Gately gave an exhibition for the winners and was awarded with the Player of the Tournament Trophy. Following the final all teams and supporters were provided a hot meal on the clubhouse and were welcomed and thanked by Cooley Kickhams Chairman Gerry Malone. John Kane then spoke on behalf of the Kane Family and thanked everyone involved in ensuring that this day will always be remembered for his father Amby, a stalwart of the Cooley Club. Both winners and runners up were presented with their trophies from Eilish Kane and also t-shirts kindly sponsored by Cuchulainn Sportswear. The winning trophy was hand crafted by John Kane and everyone will agree that it certainly was a work of art and something that Amby would have been extremely proud of. Following the on the pitch activities there was then a Halloween Fancy Dress Party in the club with music by The Stormers and what a night it was!! The most difficult part of the night was judging who won the best dressed as competition as everyone had put huge effort into the night! It was a night full of fun and laughter and as many reminisced about the past there were bucket loads more memories being created. This day may have been organised to celebrate 15 years since Cooley Ladies All Ireland win in 1998 but the day itself showcased everything that is good about the Cooley Kickhams Club with everyone coming together to commemorate a many part of a glorious history but also together to look forward to the future. Cooley Kickhams would like to thank all their sponsors and everyone involved in making the day a huge success.
