Rebels sink Galway hopes of rare double TG4 ALL-IRELAND LADIES SFC FINAL: Cork 1-11 Galway 0-8 Defending champions Galway were caught by a powerful second-half display from senior final maidens Cork as the Rebels outscored their opponents 1-8 to 0-4 to secure their first All-Ireland Ladies SFC title at Croke Park on Sunday. The win means Cork have achieved the treble set out at the beginning of the year, having won the Munster and Suzuki NFL titles earlier this year. It also brings a third senior All-Ireland crown Leeside following Cork’s wins in the hurling and camogie championships this month. Valerie Moriarty finished the game with a personal tally of 1-6 as she converted a second-half penalty and kicked four frees to guide the Rebels to victory. She was duly named Player of the Match after full time but Galway full forward and Ireland international soccer player Niamh Fahey was almost as effective for the defending champions. Mulcahy helped Cork into an early 0-2 to no score lead, but Galway’s greater experience saw them edge their way into a 0-4 to 0-3 lead by half time. Fahey was key to that revival, with three points, while Niamh Duggan opened their account in the 15th minute. However, the second half belonged to Cork, with Nollaig Cleary, Deirdre O’Reilly and Mulcahy restoring the Rebels’ lead, 0-6 to 0-4. Galway were far from out of the game but Mulcahy’s penalty with 11 minutes to go effectively sealed the contest. Galway scored just four points in the second, three of them in the final quarter, by which time Cork were already unstoppable. Share this Article 0 0
