Corofin
2-12 St Brendan’s 0-11

Corofin Ladies capped a week of awesome achievement
when they retained the ladies western hygiene
senior championship title in Caherlistrane last
Sunday.

It followed a week of celebration with the Brendan
Martin Cup through the highways and byways of
County Galway of which nine Corofin players were
part of the panel of ladies who brought honour
and glory to Galway in Croke Park on the 3rd of
October.

Corofin started strong with Sheila Fitzgerald
opening the scoring on the third minute followed
by a point from Sarah Cosgrove. St Brendan’s replied
with a point from a Gillian Joyce free. On the
eight minute Neassa Canavan finished a superb
passing movement down the right wing when she
hit the top left hand corner of the net. Corofin
dominated the first half and in the process Corofin’s
Patricia Gleeson, Sarah Cosgrove and Sheila Fitzgerald
exchanged points with Gillian Joyce, Emma O’Malley
Melinda Kelly. Corofin’s second goal arrived on
the 25th minute with a superb finish from Sheila
Fitzgerald. Corofin had complete control of the
first half and with the backs in superb form most
notable was the performance of the Heneghan girls
Ann, Sheila and Claire .

Half time score Corofin 2-8 St Brendan’s 0-6

St Brendan’s management of Con Moynihan and Claire
Kelly introduced a surprise exclusion from the
program and from play County star Michelle Delaney,
this inclusion with Nicola Fahy greatly enhanced
the left flank. A much tighter and controlled
performance from St Brendan’s ensued. At the rear
Aine Gilmore, Laura Leahy, Deirdre Martin and
Nicola Fahy tried hardest. Up front Michelle Delaney
and Ann Marie Geraghty posed the biggest treat.
Points from Michelle Delaney (3) Ann Marie Geraghty
and Gillian Joyce kept pressure on Corofin.

Overall Corofin had a controlled balanced team
with Patricia Gleeson majestic at midfield and
forwards Sarah Cosgrove , Sheila Fitzgerald and
Una Carroll constantly a thorn in the side of
St Brendan’s. Second Half points came from Deirdre
Heverin (2) Diane Murphy (1) Sarah Cosgrove (2)
Sheila Fitzgerald (1).

Corofin’s display was not wanting in any department
but a person that needs a special mention was
centre half back Ruth Stephens her skills of reading
the game and passion was well noted by all present.
A proud Captain Ann Heneghan received the Terry
Brennan trophy from Robert Tully County Treasurer.
Ann thanked all involved especially management
of Frank Morris Bernie Glynn and Pat Gleeson.
