Corofin 2-12 St Brendan’s 0-11 Corofin Ladies capped a week of awesome achievement when they retained the ladies western hygiene senior championship title in Caherlistrane last Sunday. It followed a week of celebration with the Brendan Martin Cup through the highways and byways of County Galway of which nine Corofin players were part of the panel of ladies who brought honour and glory to Galway in Croke Park on the 3rd of October. Corofin started strong with Sheila Fitzgerald opening the scoring on the third minute followed by a point from Sarah Cosgrove. St Brendan’s replied with a point from a Gillian Joyce free. On the eight minute Neassa Canavan finished a superb passing movement down the right wing when she hit the top left hand corner of the net. Corofin dominated the first half and in the process Corofin’s Patricia Gleeson, Sarah Cosgrove and Sheila Fitzgerald exchanged points with Gillian Joyce, Emma O’Malley Melinda Kelly. Corofin’s second goal arrived on the 25th minute with a superb finish from Sheila Fitzgerald. Corofin had complete control of the first half and with the backs in superb form most notable was the performance of the Heneghan girls Ann, Sheila and Claire . Half time score Corofin 2-8 St Brendan’s 0-6 St Brendan’s management of Con Moynihan and Claire Kelly introduced a surprise exclusion from the program and from play County star Michelle Delaney, this inclusion with Nicola Fahy greatly enhanced the left flank. A much tighter and controlled performance from St Brendan’s ensued. At the rear Aine Gilmore, Laura Leahy, Deirdre Martin and Nicola Fahy tried hardest. Up front Michelle Delaney and Ann Marie Geraghty posed the biggest treat. Points from Michelle Delaney (3) Ann Marie Geraghty and Gillian Joyce kept pressure on Corofin. Overall Corofin had a controlled balanced team with Patricia Gleeson majestic at midfield and forwards Sarah Cosgrove , Sheila Fitzgerald and Una Carroll constantly a thorn in the side of St Brendan’s. Full time Score: Corofin 2-12 St Brendan’s 0-11 Corofin’s display was not wanting in any department but a person that needs a special mention was centre half back Ruth Stephens her skills of reading the game and passion was well noted by all present. A proud Captain Ann Heneghan received the Terry Brennan trophy from Robert Tully County Treasurer. Ann thanked all involved especially management of Frank Morris Bernie Glynn and Pat Gleeson.
