Doonbeg overcome Newmarket on Fergus

Doonbeg Ladies:     7.04                                 Newmarket on Fergus  Ladies:     0.11

In sunny Kilmihil on Sunday afternoon Doonbeg Ladies captured their first points in the Senior Championship when they overcame a spirited Newmarket on Fergus team.  Doonbeg were dealt a severe blow ten minutes into the first half when the referee issued a red card to their centre back.  Newmarket on Fergus Ladies, however, did not take full advantage of their numerical superiority and the old adage that goals win matches was certainly true in this encounter with Doonbeg raising green flags on seven occasions.

Ailish Considine opened the scoring for Doonbeg with a converted free followed by a point from Carla Behan.  Carol O’Leary scored a point for Newmarket on Fergus before Ailish Considine scored the first of her goals.  Ailish was again involved when she laid off to Niamh Conway who scored a fine goal for Doonbeg.  Doonbeg were then down to 14 players and Newmarket on Fergus had points from Carol O’Leary (1) and Cushla Hehir (2) leaving the half time score 2.02 to 0.04 in favour of Doonbeg.

Doonbeg regrouped and with some positional changes they went on the attack straight from the throw in.  Ailish Considine goaled and this was quickly followed by a point from  Nollaig Blake.  Niki Kaiser, Stephanie Halpin and Laura McMahon all pointed for Newmarket on Fergus.  Lisa McMahon was introduced for Doonbeg and was unlucky not to get a goal from her first touch.  However, she made no mistake when she took a pass from Siobhan Behan to goal for Doonbeg.    Laura Egan then pounced on a rebound from a Niamh Conway effort slamming the ball to the Newmarket net.  Ailish Considine added a pointed free with Niki Kaiser pointing for Newmarket on Fergus.  Niamh Conway raised her second green flag for Doonbeg.  Points from Niki Kaiser, Carol O’Leary (free) and Stephanie Halpin could not halt Doonbeg and Ailish Considine had the final say when she netted her third goal.

Doonbeg were the better balanced team on the day in spite of their numerical disadvantage and all players and subs gave full commitment.   Newmarket had some very good individual displays but their forwards were well marshalled by the solid Doonbeg back line.
