Kieran and Dean Fanning present the Abbey Fanning Cup to Donaghmoyne captain Angela Lennon There was double delight for Donaghmoyne at the Monaghan Harps sevens with their A team winning the Abbey Fanning Cup and their B side lifting the AIB shield. Played in beautiful sunshine, the day was a real feast of football and a great advertisement for Ireland fastest growing sport. In the cup semi finals Donamoyne beat hosts Monaghan Harps 2-10 to 3-5 and Tyholland defeated Castlewellan 5-4 to 3-6 to set up an all Monaghan final. In the final Donaghmoyne had a dream start with Joanne Courtney netting on their first attack. Another two goals from the excellent Angela Lennon and a flurry of late points gave Donaghmoyne an interval lead of 3-5 to 1-1. The second half was a much closer affair. Christina Mc Mahon found the net for Tyholland early on, but her goal was later cancelled by a good strike from Fiona Courtney. Donaghmoyne went on to win 4-8 to 2-3. There was some consolation for Tyholland when Therese Mc Nally was named player of the tournament. In an entertaining Shield final Donaghmoyne got the better of Scotstown 3-8 to 0-4.
