Double success for Cork Ladies

CORK
LADIES FOOTBALL SENIORS DEFEAT DEISE IN SECOND ROUND

Cork remained on course for a place in the Munster final when
they defeated Waterford in the second round of the senior championship
on Monday evening in Páirc UÍ Rinn. The opening quarter was a
shaky one and it was the visitors who opened the scoring with
a Nimah Briggs free but after Dromtariffe’s Geraldine O Flynn
replied with some well worked scores and Cork began to settle.

At midfield Norita Kelly did well to hold off the physical Marian
Ryan and she was assisted by captain Juliet Murphy. Defensively
Briege Corkery won a huge amount of ball on the right flank and
further scores were added by Amanda Murphy, Aisling Barrett and
Rena Buckley and they led at the half 0-9 0-4.

The impressive Geraldine O Flynn looked to have found her form
on the night as she opened Cork’s scoring in the second half along
with points from Valerie Mulcahy, Nollaig Cleary and Briege Corkery.
In goal, Elaine Harte was idle for the majority of the game until
Waterford awoke from their slumber in the last five minutes and
notched a total of 1-4, including a spectacular goal coming from
the boot of Aoife Murphy. Ciara Walsh and Rena Buckley did well
in the backline and found themselves supporting where ever possible.
Cork face Clare in the third round of the championship on Monday
25 July at home.

JUNIORS IMPRESS IN THIRD ROUND TIE
The Cork junior squad gave a formidable performance in the this
third round Munster championship clash against Páirc Ui Rinn on
Monday last, winning 2-13 1-8. Waterford found it difficult to
break down the Cork defence as Blathnaid Wiseman and Tara Galvin
showed excellent form. In midfield Elaine Cotter proved outstanding
in the second while up front Clodagh O Driscoll and Ciara O Sullivan
worked well together. They now play Tipperary on Monday 25 July
in the fourth round of the TG4 Munster junior championship and
should they win will qualify for the final on August 7.
