Down Ladies Roundup

Down Ladies Roundup

The County Senior team open their championship campaign this weekend against Monaghan. It will be a tough game given the way that Monaghan disposed of Donegal in the last round. We wish them every success.

Round-up

In the Junior League the much anticipated meeting of Teconnaught and Mayobridge on Saturday night certainly lived up to the high expectations. This game was an absolute thriller from start to finish with no shortage of twists and turns along the way. In the end a draw was probably a fair result with neither team really deserving to lose. Mayobridge will be delighted with the draw and the two point cushion they have at the top of the league is now maintained which keeps them on track for league honours. The sky-blues have a had a few wobbles in the last few games and this was the closest they came to losing their 100% record in 2009. Teconnaught will take a lot of encouragement from this draw and as both teams are in opposite sides of the championship draw, we might have another thriller to look forward to in September if both teams make it through to the Junior final. Tullylish had a good week at the races with wins over Saul midweek and Clonduff on Saturday evening. These two wins moves them nicely into third place just two points behind Teconnaught and four behind leaders Mayobridge. The top two will be looking over their shoulders as Tullylish are perfectly positioned to ensure that the remainder of the league program is not a formality and they are more than capable of taking advantage of any slip-ups.

The week ahead

Due to County committments there is a limited league programme this weekend. In the Junior League Clonduff entertain St. Johns and the yellows with home advantage should be good for the win. Likewise Tullylish should continue their good form of late with another win at the expense of St. Michaels. Teconnaught fresh from their draw against the league leaders will want to ensure there are no slip ups at Drumgath and they should maintain the challenge with another victory expected. Mayobridge entertain Aughlisnafin and on paper this should be a straight forward win for the blues, however the Fin have notched a few results together of late and this trip might not just go exactly to the Mayobridge script. A win for the Bridge but closer than expected.

In the U-16 League Section A, Ballymartin maintained their 100% league record against Downpatrick and are now only one match way from claiming the league title. They travel to Bredagh and must win as Carryduff are hot on their tails should they slip up. A trip to the city can be a difficult journey but the Lilywhites will start as favourites. Carryduff welcome Downpatrick and they must win incase Ballymartin stumble over at Cherryvale as this would force a play-off at the top to decide the league. The Duff will expect to win against the hoops and i don’t see any upset on the cards. Bosco travel to Teconnaught and with a couple of good wins under their belts lately they should continue their good form with another victory. Bryansford travel to Burren in what has been a difficult campaign for them. The experience of playing at this level will certainly stand by them even if the results weren’t always to their liking. Burren should advance here. In Section B, the big game is the meeting of Annaclone and Saul. Both teams sit level at the top though Saul have a game in hand. I fully expect this game to go to the wire with the bare minimum separating the teams at the long whistle. A draw cannot be ruled out but i am going to plump for a narrow Annaclone victory with home advantage just swinging it for them. The meeting of Bright and Carryduff B should also be close with both teams pointless the only certainy is that this will have changed by Sunday afternoon with a point a piece a distinct possibility. Clonduff entertain Castlewellan and this is likely to be a high scoring affair as both teams love to attack. Castlewellan have been slightly the more impressive of late and based on this they might just edge proceedings. In the other match Rostrevor travel to Shamrocks with the reds looking the more likely to secure the win and the two points.
