Dublin B lose narrowly to Wexford

MATCH REPORT:

 Dublin B 0- 05 – Wexford 1- 03

8th
February 2004.

Mobhi
Road, Glasnevin.

Na
Fianna’s Mobhi Road hallowed turf was the venue for the
Dublin’s ladies Senior and Senior B teams only home games
of this years Suzuki National League. While the senior team
had a very comprehensive win over Leinster rivals Laois
the B team games was a different affair entirely. Their
opposition Wexford are a team in a redevelopment stage having
recently been re-graded to Junior Status.

The
game was very closely contested and at times a very dogged
and tough encounter. Wexford were on the scoreboard first
with a fine point from Centre forward Ciara Scallan. Dublin
who were playing win the wind in the first half failed to
convert numerous chances in front of the Wexford goal and
at the interval found themselves trailing by two points,
half time score Dublin 0-00, Wexford 0-02. Wexford’s second
point came from a free courtesy of Wexford half forward
Michelle Hinchey.

Dublin’s
up their performance in the second half and brought the
game level with points from Roisin Gillen and Angela Gallagher.
The second half remained as tough as the first with Dublin
finding it hard to convert their chances in front of the
Wexford posts.

Wexford
edged in front with a point from Sinead Kearns. Ten minutes
into the second half Dublin were awarded a penalty when
full forward Lorena Aver was fouled inside the small square
however Dublin’s scoring luck remained unchanged as Angela
Gallagher’s shot was saved by Wexford keeper Aine Murphy.
Ironically five minutes later Wexford were also awarded
a penalty when Lizzie Kent was tripped as she advanced on
the Dublin goal.  Dublin
keeper Caroline Hughes showed off her goalkeeping skills
proving she was equal to her Wexford counterpart when she
superbly stopped the penalty shot from Wexford’s Ciara Scallan.

Just
as Dublin seemed to be getting to grips at midfield and
levelled the game with a point from first half substitute
Ciara Burgess Dublin received a blow when Wexford got an
opportunist goal. A long range shot from Wexford’s Michelle
Hinchey got caught the breeze and sailed past Dublin’s keeper
Caroline Hughes and into the top corner of the Dublin net.

Dublin
bravely fought back with further points from Anna McGillicuddy
and Angela Gallagher put when match referee Liam Tierett
blew the final whistle is was the Slaneysiders who gave
a loudest cheer having secured two valuable league points
with a one point victory of the Dub’s.
