Dublin Under 16s through to Leinster Final

U16 ‘A’ Leinster Championship Semi-Final; Dublin vs Wicklow; Sat 26th June 2010 – by Alan Garvin

Dublin produced a good display to overcome a spirited Wicklow side in the U16 Leinster Championship Semi Final in Pairc Ui Mhurchu, Ballyboden, on Saturday 26th June. Played in very hot conditions both teams displayed some excellent football but it was the home team that prevailed on a score line of 6-13 to 1-4.

Dublin started well with early goals from Maria Kenny and Lauren Ebbs before Wicklow struck back with a goal of their own. The Wicklow team, with strong ball carrying players in midfield and centre half forward, put a lot of pressure on the Dublin half and full back lines. However superb defending and blocking from captain Deirdre Murphy at full back assisted by corner backs,Claire King and Leah Caffrey, kept Wicklow at bay. Dublin keeper, Norah Harney, made one great save midway through the half and was secure with numerous high balls that the Wicklow attack sent in.

The Dublin half backs Sarah McCaffrey, Aoife Nolan and Grainne Barrett worked tirelessly and broke forward whenever possible to assist the midfielders Emma McDonagh and Siobhan Woods. Scores from Lauren Ebbs and Siobhan Woods followed by a good point from the left foot of full forward Shauna Garvin extended Dublin’s advantage. At this stage Dublin were playing some great team football a further goal from Maria Kenny left the score 4-4 to 1-3 at half time.

Dublin started the second half well in general play but struggled to find their range in front of goal. A point from the hard working Maria McGrath followed by a Wicklow point were the only scores in the first fifteen minutes of the second half. Half forwards Mollie Lamb, Maria McGrath and Laura O’Curry secured regular possession and further scores from Siobhan Woods settled Dublin nerves.

With seven minutes to go Dublin finally got on top of a very spirited Wicklow side and scored 1-8 in the final started period through scores from Emma McDonagh, Siobhan Woods, Aine Gilmore and Sarah Burns. Further late scores from Mollie Lamb sealed the Dublin victory on a scoreline of 6-13 to 1-4.

Both Dublin and Wicklow produced good displays particularly considering the very hot conditions that made playing an intense semi-final very difficult. Dublin’s firepower finally overpowered Wicklow however it is a testament to Wicklow’s display that the Dublin full back line was their strongest line on the day. The score line, which ended up 6-13 to 1-4 in Dublin’s favour, in no way reflected the effort and possession of the Wicklow team. Dublin now look forward to facing the other semi-finalists, Laois in the Leinster Final in mid July.
