Fermanagh snr ladies got their division 2 campaign off to a losing start against Cavan snr ladies in a blustery temple port on Sunday afternoon.
Fermanaghs Caroline little , who was captaining the side on the day, got the scoring started in the 7th minute converting a free after she herself had been fouled. Cavans bronagh Sheridan responded less than a minute later also converting a free .
Caroline little was to put fermanagh back in the lead in the 13th minute again converting another free after a foul on herself. Sharon little was to add another score in the 16th minute from near to the sideline 30 metres out with a sweetly struck free kick off her left foot.
Fermanagh now had a 0-3 to 0-1 lead after 16 minutes of play. Fermanaghs defence was putting up a strong display with corner back Patricia melanaphy leading by example.
In a two minute spell however cavan were to draw level with first bronagh Sheridan scoring a point in the 20th minute and Maria smith adding another point in the 22nd minute. Cavan now enjoying a purple patch were to take the lead in the 23rd minute with Clara Reilly scoring a point , the score was now cavan 0-4 and fermanagh 0-3.
Fermangh steadied the ship and started to regain a foothold in the game and in the 28th minute ashling moane sent over the equalizing point. Fermanagh were to score the only goal off the game on the stroke of half time , fermanaghs Shauna Hamilton started a run just inside the cavan half and having beaten two cavan defenders took a shot at goal from 30 metres out , the ball swirled and dipped and the cavan goalkeeper was unable to field it properly , the ball was spilled into the path off the on rushing Caroline little who dispatched the ball to the back off the net from 6 yards out.
Score at half time was cavan 0-4 fermanagh 1-4.Cavan were to start the scoring in the 2nd half with a point from Clara Reilly in the 32nd minute of the game after sustained pressure on the fermanagh goal. Fermanaghs Ashling Moane was to restore fermanaghs 3 point lead in the 34th minute of the game.Fermanagh were not to score again for 19 minutes. In that time Cavan were to eat away at fermanagh’s lead with Bronagh Sheridan pointing in the 39th minute , Renee Murphy pointing in 41st minute and Sheridan again in the 51st minute.
Roisin o Keefe and Ashling Doonan had been introduced by cavan as early 2nd half substitutes with Fermanagh introducing Eimir Keenan for Roisin Carron in the half forwards and Carrie Mooney replacing the hard working Donna Maguire in the Full forward line.
Fermanagh were to retake the lead in the 55th minute with a well taken point from the boot off the hard working Shauna Hamilton. Fermanagh introduced Aileen Moane to replace the very impressive Ashling Mc Caughey at Full Forward. Both sides created scoring chances as the game headed into time added on. Cavans Ashling Doonan was to make 2 decisive contributions in the 3rd and 4th minute of time added on as she scored 2 points to put Cavan 1 point up but still Fermanagh had one last chance to snatch a dramatic victory as first Carrie Mooney and then Caroline Little were to have goal bound shots blocked by desperate Cavan defenders.
After almost 66 minutes of play the referee called the game to a finish and cavan enjoyed a 1 point victory.
The Fermanagh management team were delighted with the performance of the players who had started the game and the players who had went on as substitutes.
Patricia Melanaphy put in a player of the match performance for Fermanagh in defence with Sarah Stewart having a good game in goals for fermanagh as well.
