Gael Power strikes again

Hail, wind, Rain or Sun it seems Southern Gaels can’t be matched
no matter what the weather throws up. The Southerns landed their
eight title of note from the year past as they added the County
Minor crown to their Senior County championship and Feile All
Ireland titles.

In trying conditions they simply had too much fire power for CastleIsland
who got the tonic start inside three minutes when Kerry underage
star Lorraine Scanlon struck for her side’s only goal. The Gaels
weren’t long in responding as they swept down field in the ninth
minute and Sinead “Carney” O’Sullivan raised their opening green
flag in the greasy conditions. The pattern of play suggested little
would separate the sides until an untimely error handed the winners
the initative as Marie Curran’s thunderous drive was fumbled to
the net after her original shot was parried. That gave Southern
Gaels the impetus to push on and they led by 2-5 to 1-4 at half
time. It was one way traffic in the second half as the winners
defence marshalled the Desmonds strikeforce to such effect that
they were limited to just one further score.

The South Kerry girls embarked on a scoring spree as Karen O’Neill,
Louise O’Shea added goals while Sinead “Carney” O’Sullivan and
Marie Curran both grabbed their second goals of the game. The
Gaels eased to victory despite the best efforts of Lorraine Scanlon
and Aisling Leonard for CastleIsland as the all conquering South
Kerry side pinched the season’s final silverware. Southern Gaels
are the benchmark for any Kerry club as they set the standards
both on and off the field and their organization, commitment,
energy and drive behind each of their sides is something to admire.
As one of their seasoned Senior players said during the year “We
don’t play for fun, we play to win!!”
