Gaelic4Girls National Blitz Day 2009

Gaelic4Girls National Blitz Day 2009

Gaelic4Girls is a National programme aimed at disadvantaged areas which are predominately non traditional Ladies Gaelic Football areas also. The programme has been supported by the Irish Sports Council Women in Sport Initiative for the past 3 years and has proven a huge hit at increasing young girls participation in sport.

This year the programme took place in 8 venues around the Country, Cork City (Ballyphephane and Mayfield), Dublin (Balbriggan and Gloucester Street), Cavan Town, Derry City, Belfast, Limerick City, Mayo (Ballyhaunis) and Westmeath (Tang). Last year, for the first time ever a National Blitz Day was held to celebrate the growth of the programme and its achievement in introducing young girls to Ladies Gaelic Football. This Blitz Day was a resounding success and therefore we are planning a blitz for 2009.

The 2009 National Blitz Day will take place in St. Brigid’s GAA grounds, Kiltoom, Athlone on Saturday 6th June, commencing at 12.30 p.m. (Registration).

The day is guaranteed to be fun-filled with an excess of 300 girls, aged 9 – 13 years participating on the day. Over 90% of these girls have never played Ladies Gaelic Football or any sport before taking part in this game-based initiative.

All the girls will participate in mini-games where they can showcase their newly learned skills wearing their unique area colour t-shirt. The girls will also have an opportunity to meet and be coached by our Ladies All-Stars and the day will conclude with all participants receiving a specially engraved medal from our President Pat Quill.
