GALWAY AND DUBLIN FINISH ALL SQUARE IN TUAM

GALWAY   2-09   DUBLIN 1-12

Galway and Dublin shared the points in a very entertaining clash in Round 2 of the Tesco Home Grown NFL in a foggy Tuam on Sunday. Referee Gus Chapman inspected the pitch before the throw in and decided to wait 10 mins as the fog was very slow to lift. But when he  got the game under-way  the supporters were served up an hour of top class football played at a ferocious pace.

Roisin Leonard who started in place of Lucy Hannon pointed in the 1st minute to give Galway an early lead but Dublin responded with points from Carla Rowe, Kim Flood and Amy Connolly. Galway struggled with the pace of Dublin early on and when they did attack Dublin’s tenacious defence made scoring chances difficult to come by; however, in the 12th minute when they did move the ball quickly they got behind the visitors defence and Edel Concannon kept a cool head to score Galway’s 1st goal. Dublin hit back with a point from Sarah McCaffery and a goal from Niamh McEvoy. A minute later Edel Concannon brought Galway back into the game with her 2nd goal and they levelled things up with 2 minutes of the half left with an Annette Clarke free for a foul on Emer Flaherty after a great run through the middle. Niamh McEvoy rounded off a strong first half performance for Dublin as she pointed in the final minute to leave Dublin holding the slenderest lead.

Marie Hoey pointed for Galway as the 2nd half got under way but Dublin were awarded a penalty 2 minutes later. Johanna Connolly brilliantly saved but Carla Rowe scored her 3rd point as the Dubs edged ahead by a one. Tracy Leonard put Galway ahead with 2 points but Dublin hit back with one each from Carla Rowe, Nicole Owens and Lucy Collins.

As the half closed Galway hit a purple patch and 3 Clarke frees and one from play from Roisin Leonard had Galway up by 2. Carla Rowe scored her 5th point of the game and that was when Sarah McCaffrey stepped up to score the equalising pointein the final minute of injury time to level the game although a last gasp effort from Annette Clarke which went narrowly wide nearly claimed all the points for the hosts.
