Galway hammer Mayo in Salthill

Galway
hammer Mayo in Salthill

Galway created history when the comprehensively defeated
All-Ireland champions Mayo in Pearse Stadium today to claim
their first Connacht ladies football title. Galway started
the game with intent and were 0-03 to no score in front
before Mayo responded with two Cora Staunton frees in the
15th and 16th minutes. Amazingly, these would be the reigning
All-Ireland champions’ last scores. At half time Galway
lead 0-06 to 0-02, with scores from two Niamh Duggan frees,
a free from Gillian Joyce, two from play from Patricia Gleeson
and a point from Lorna Joyce.

In the second half Galway completely dominated the game,
and despite losing Aine Gilmore to the sin bin, never looked
in trouble. Second half points from the impressive Patrica
Gleeson, three from Niamh Duggan, two from Lorna Joyce,
two from Lisa Cohill and one apiece from Ger Kinneally and
substitute Michelle Delaney saw Galway outscore Mayo by
10 points to none in an incredible second half.

Niamh Fahy, sister of senior star Richie Fahy, was player
of the game. Galway will now be hotly tipped to go all the
way to All-Ireland glory after this superb win.
